DESCRIPTION
inRes, short for “in Residence,” is a very early stage acceleration program for entrepreneurial teams working in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in Portugal, offered by the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program. The program is targeted to entrepreneurial teams that: want to start a company and commercialize a technology; have proven technical feasibility of their product or service; have had enough initial interaction with their target markets and industries, to have minimally consistent product or service and business concepts; and are not yet established companies regularly selling their products or services. The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, funded by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), is responsible for the coordination of inRes, in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA), and UTEN Portugal.

Entrepreneurial teams in these contexts often lack:
specific competences for the management of early stage technology businesses
mentoring and contacts with potential advisors contacts with potential
customers, partners, industry experts, and funding
As a consequence, they may develop more slowly and with
inferior performance
Problem Addressed Early stage high-tech new ventures, in particular academic spin-offs, led by less experienced entrepreneurs, often have human and social capital gaps.

n Mentors do not manage the teams, make decisions for them, or perform the work that they are expected to carry out.
14
+inRes: Why CMU and Pittsburgh?
n The exposure to CMU’s innovation ecosystem, stimulating and enabling top talent to generate and pursue groundbreaking ideas, and transform them into viable businesses, has been crucial in this process.
n In 2013, faculty and students at CMU launched a record number of 36 new companies.
n CMU's main campus is located in Pittsburgh, the second-largest city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
15
+inRes: Deliverables
n The work is supported by a set of tools and deliverables, converging at the end of the initiative into: n a group report on collectively learned lessons;
n and team reports containing:
n the current understanding of product/service and business concepts;
n contacts developed and their role in the future of the startup;
n a profile of the team’s managerial capabilities;
n the identification of aspects to be developed in the future.
16
+inRes: Support
n There are no fees for participation in any of the activities of the inRes initiative.
n For the immersion period in Pittsburgh, in the U.S., the CMU Portugal Program expects to provide support for the plane trips between Portugal and Pittsburgh, and an International Master-Level Mobility Grant, for each inRes team member, to cover living expenses.
n The participants will incur all other expenses in Portugal and in the United States.
17
