Liberdade Square (Liberty or Freedom Square; Praça da Liberdade) is located in Santo Ildefonso parish, in the lower town

Liberdade Square is continuous on its north side with the Avenida dos Aliados, an important avenue of the city

Avenida dos Aliados is generally regarded as the city centre and is as such Porto's most grandiose avenue. Dominated by the town hall (Camara Municipal), the avenue is flanked by ornate neoclassical buildings with lawns and trees in the centre

Liberdade Square has its origins

in the beginning of the 18th

century

It was in 1718 that a project for the

urbanisation of the area begun, which

resulted in the creation of new

streets and an ample square, known as Praça Nova (New

Square). The square was initially limited by the medieval walls of the city and by urban palaces, all of which

are now lost.

After 1788, the religious order of

Saint Eligius (known as Lóios, in Portuguese)

built a convent on the south side of the square; the

imposing Neoclassical façade of the

convent, nowadays known as the Cardosas Palace (Palácio das Cardosas) is the oldest extant

building of the square,

dominating the south side of the square for over

200 years

The huge square in front of the Town Hall and the Aliados Avenue has undergone a modernization project in the last years. It is a beautiful open space lined with trees and flanked by some of the most majestic buildings in the city.

During the 19th century, several factors increased the

importance of the square. The municipality moved to a

building on the north side of the square after 1819, and

towards the end of the century facilities like the D. Luís Bridge

(1887) and São Bento Train Station (1896) were opened

nearby. Liberdade Square was a political, economical and

social centre for Porto

In 1866 a monument dedicated to King Peter IV, a monarch closely linked to Porto, was inaugurated in the middle of the square.

The monument, by French sculptor Anatole Calmels, consists of a statue of Peter IV riding a horse and holding the Constitution that he had fought to protect during the Liberal Wars.

The current City Hall of Porto, was designed by architect Correia da Silva and began construction in 1920.The project arose as a result of the expansion of the civic center designed by English architect Barry Parker, approved in 1916. Although it was started in 1920, works in the building of the town hall suffered numerous interruptions, changes were introduced to the original project, by architect Carlos Ramos. The municipal services are only installed in the new building in 1957. The building consists of six floors, a basement and two inner courtyards.The central tower, 70 meters high, with a chiming clock, accessible by an indoor climbing 180 steps.

Trindade This early

19th century church,

hosts many concerts

and recitals. It

has an austere classical façade

topped by a bell tower and facing it in a small square is an 18th century

fountain.

The famous Café Majestic enlightened the street with its Art Nouveau decoration, by architect João Queiroz.

The famous historic Café Majestic, is the best known in Porto
