PLANNING THE ROUTE FROM AGUILAR TO mADEIRA

By foot and ferry 1.798 km 8 days and 5 hours
In public transport 1.918 km 4 hours in bus and 1hour and 50 minutes in plane.
• The best option is the third one:– Four hours to Barajas by bus– One hour to Lisboa by plane– 50 minutes to Madeira.
What will we learn?
• We will know another country and culture.– Madeira is the largest island in the Archipelago of
Madeira, located in the Atlantic Ocean. The remaining islands are the Porto Santo, the Desertas and Selvagens.
– This island was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. Its name (Madeira=Wood), as it is not difficult to understand, was due to the abundance of this raw material on the island.
Information about the destination.
• Data from the Island:– Country: Portugal– Population: 250.000 inhabitants– Area: 751 Km2– Language: Portuguese– Origin: Volcanic– Capital: Funchal– Climate: Mediterranean temperatures that
oscillate between 25ºC in summer and 17 ºC in winter.
• Funchal– It is the capital of Madeira and it was elevated
to the category of city in 1508. Its mild climate and its excellent geographical position allowed it to a high development.
• Festivities: 31st December– In a unique setting at midnight Funchal turns
into a real show in the open air. First we hear the whistles of the cruise ships that visit the island and then we take the fireworks that illuminate the sky with different colors and forms, bringing hope and joy. It was considered in the Guinness Book as the biggest fireworks in the world.
• Other cities–Câmara de Lobos , Ribeira, Ponta
do Sol, Calheta, Porto Moniz, Säo Vicente, Santana, Machico, Santa Cruz, Porto Santo, and so on.– In Madeira you can go to Cabo
Girao wich is the highest cape in Europe. It is a propontory with 580 meters of altitude that offers a magnificent view from Funchal until Camara de Lobos.– In Säo Vicente you can visit
famous Caves and Volcanism Center
Merry Christmas
