“Dooars” the word is derived from the word ‘duar’ or ‘door’. The name signifies its location as a gateway to the hill stations of North Bengal and Sikkim as well as Bhutan and Assam. The 130 X 40 sq.km stretched Dooars valley, an important travel destination in Eastern Himalaya, is covered with lush green forests and teagardens and intersected by the rivers like Tista, Torsa, Jaldhaka and their innumerable tributaries. It is the home to one horned rhino, gaur and many other rare species. A tour or a safari through these forests of Dooars will be a life time experience.

Dooars plains can be broadly divided into Eastern Dooars, Central Dooars and Western Dooars.

Central Dooars – Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary has been the prime attraction in this area. Chilapata forests adjacent to Jaldapara has also become an important tourist destination since the last few years. The main entry point of Bhutan at Jaigaon / Phuentsholing is also in this area. The central Dooars area is dotted with tea gardens and a number of small towns such as Banarhat, Birpara, Madarihat, Binnaguri.

Eastern Dooars Buxa tiger reserve is the most important tourist destination and forest in this area. Alipurduar, Coochbehar are major towns. Buxa and its surrounding area offer a large number of small but attractive tourist destinations such as Jayanti, Raimatang, Buxa fort, Lepchakha, Rajabhatkhawa, Hatipota, Bhutanghat etc.

Western Dooars –This is the most popular tourist area in Dooars. Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, two forests on both sides of Murti river, are the most popular tourist area of Dooars. This area also has the best tourism infrastructure with large number of hotels and resorts around Gorumara / Chapramari area.

Western Dooars also offers a number of smaller off beat tourist destinations in the hills and its foothills such as Samsing, Bindu, Jhalong, Paren, Jaldhaka, Nagrakata, Murti and others.

Weather of Dooars Winter

The cold season starts by the first week of November and continues upto the end of February. January is the coldest month with minimum temperature of 10.7 Celsius and daily maximum temperature remains at 23.6 Degree Celsius.

MonsoonThe rainy season in this area starts in the month of July with the arrival of south-west monsoon. The region receives a record rainfall during July-August. The average annual rainfall in this region is 3925 mm.

SummerTemperature starts rising by March, which continues till October end being June and July the hottest months. But temperature never rises to the unbearable limit because of its locational advantage.

JUNGLE OF DOOARS Gorumara National Park is the home of large numbers of Rhino, Bison, Elephant and other wildlife. A jeep safari inside the forest is the best way to pursue wildlife. The animal population has grown so much over the past few years that the government is considering expanding the park area. It is one of the most easily accessible National Parks of the region.

Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary is famous for its one horned rhino and the elephant safari. The morning elephant safari inside the grassland is an experience of a lifetime. This is arguably the most popular Jungle of the region among the visitors.

Land development works have been started. This cottage is projected to build beside Jayanti River and opposite to BUXA range which is the northern part of West Bengal.
