ModicaModicaModica (Sicilian: Muòrica) is a city and comune in the Province of Ragusa, Sicily, southern Italy. The city is situated in the Hyblaean Mountains and, along with Val di Noto, is part of UNESCO Heritage Sites in Italy. Modica is an elegant town with probably the best baroque church of the valley. According to Thucydides, the city was founded in 1360 BC or 1031 BC and was inhabited by the Sicels in the 7th century BC. It was probably a dependency of Syracuse.The southeast of Sicily and Modica was rapidly Christianized, as the diocese of Syracuse boasts an apostolic foundation by St. Paul in 61 AD

Modica (Muòrica în dialect sicilian) este un oraş în provincia Ragusa în Sicilia. Situat la poalele Munţilor Iblei, la o altitudine de 296 metri, face parte dintre oraşele Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO din Val di Noto. Modica este un oraş elegant şi are probabil cele mai frumoase biserici din zonă. Conform celor scrise de Tucidide oraşul a fost fondat în anul 1360 sau 1031 î.Hr., în secolul VII fiind locuit de siculi şi probabil era vasal Siracuzei.Sudestul Siciliei şi Modica au fost creştinate devreme astfel că Siracuza se făleşte cu faptul că eparhia sa a fost fondată chiar de Apostolul Pavel în anul 61.

The town consists of a lower part (Modica Bassa) and a higher, more ancient part, Modica Alta, connected by numerous flights of steps.

Asemeni celorlalte oraşe din Val di Noto Modica a avut mult de suferit în urma cutremurului din 1693 şi oraşul a fost reconstruit în stil Baroc Sicilian. Supranumit oraşul cu o sută de biserici este renumit pentru aşezarea sa sudică şi pentru frumuseţea stilului baroc.

The construction of the church dedicated to San Pietro in Modica Bassa dates back to the years 1350 -1360. It was destroyed by the earthquake in 1613 and reconstructed soon afterwards; but was demolished once again by the earthquake in 1693 and was finally rebuilt during the beginning of XVIII century.
