Original name: Paul Doumer ( The Governer General of French Indochina 1897-1902) – until North VN Independence in 1954 Long Bien Bridge

Built in 08/1898, finished 02/1902, inaugurated 1903

Designed by Gustave Eiffel, built by the Dayde’ n Pille’ Company

General information

1st bridge across the Red river, connect Ha Noi and Gia Lam, and made the only rail link between Hanoi and the main port of Hai Phong

Reason of building: the French colonial wanted to develop a transportation system in Vietnam to step up its colonization

Length: 1680m including 19 steel spans at that time: the longest bridge in Indochina and 1 of the 4 largest bridges in the world

Many Vietnamese people died for building, repairing the serious damage and protecting the bridge from the enemy’s destruction

The place that witnessed the last French colonists left Hanoi (10/10/1954)

A connection point to transport tons of rice from Northern and Northern Central area of Vietnam to Dien Bien Phu battle, and contributed to the win of VN army against French in 1954

memories of youth on the bridge

Designed in the shape of a dragon bend with the Thang Long’s history and architecture

Considered the pride, symbol of architecture in the Far East

Considered as the horizontal Effeil Tower (Paris)

Used to be the fourth largest and the second longest bridge in the world ( at the time of construction)

One of well-known attractions in Hanoi, integrated into the Hanoi central tourism area: the Old Quarter, Sword Lake, Hanoi Opera House, Hang Dau water tower

Current management & Plans As the bridge ages, population grows exponentially

and traffic becomes an aching problem Many parts of the bridge have been hurt seriously A controversial issue:

Turn the bridge into a contemporary art museum Turn the island landmass in the middle of Red River ‘Bai Giua’ into a park

Reserve it as a historical evidence, only light traffic allowed

Conclusion & Recommendations

Conservation and Maintenance: Why? – Preserving completely the historical and architectural

values of the bridge - Maintaining the residents’ daily routine - Helping maintain the perception of people, esp. tourists

about the ancient spirit of Hanoi How? – Fix of damaged parts and maintenance of the whole

bridge - Control the activities on the bridge: open market,

couples’ lock trend, etc. - A ban on motorbikes’ commuting

- A feasible plan on building another railway bridge for trains

- The existing railway: only for tourist trams
