THE CITYLondon is the capital of England and of the United
Kingdom. It is the most important political, financial, cultural and artistic center of the United Kingdom and one of the most important cities in the world. London's population is 7,421,229 inhabitants in Greater London , to which are added a few more millions in the metropolitan area . There is a huge variety of ethnicities , cultures and religions.
HISTORYBetween XVI and XX
century, London flourished, being the capital of the British Empire . The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of the city. Reconstruction lasted over 10 years and was led by Sir Christopher Wren , who, on that occasion, has designed and built many of London's iconic buildings today , as it would be for example St. Paul Cathedral.
GEOGRAPHYGreater London covers an area of 1579 km² on the shore
of Thames, navigable river. River had a major influence in the development of the city. The city was founded on the north bank, and until the eighteenth century there was only one bridge, London Bridge, which helped the city to develop very fast.
CULTURELondon is an
international center of art, music, museums, and many others.
London hosts five symphonies, more than 30 theaters and no less than 240 museums. The best known are the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.

MILLENNIUM DOME• Originally used to house the Millennium Experience, a major exhibition celebrating the beginning of the third millennium.
BUCKINGHAM PALACE•It s the London residence and principal workplace of the monarchy of the United Kingdom.
