INTRODUCTION Polokwane is the capital city of Limpopo Province
Limpopo is one of the 9 provinces in RSA
It borders 3 SADC Member States (Zimbabwe in the North,
Botswana in the West and Mozambique in the East) which makes
it a Strategic Regional Gateway
In the south is Gauteng Province where O.R Tambo International
Airport is located
Limpopo accounts for over 70% of the world renowned Kruger
National Park and has the largest unexploited platinum reserves
globally followed by North West Province and Russia 3

SPATIAL LOCATION
CURRENT CAPACITY Polokwane International Airport (PIA) is a Cat 9 Airport
The airport currently has a scheduled service between Polokwane and
O.R Tambo and several unscheduled domestic and regional operations
It has four aprons with parking capacity of 74,800 sqm, modern air traffic
control and navigational aids, rail and road accessibility on the N1
motorway linking Cape Town, Johannesburg, Polokwane, Harare and the
rest of Africa
The airport has two runways, one with 3,175 meters and the other with
2,581 meters lengths
It has 18 hangars with sizes ranging from 500 sqm to 5,500 sqm
There is 9.4 million sqm of available land for development at the airport 5

To develop Polokwane Aerotropolis taking
advantage of the existing airport capacity and
land availability for non-aeronautical activities
