the legendary King, Mahabali. Blessed with fine weather that marks the beginning of the season of harvest (ONAM), this most popular festival of Kerala, is a time for merriment and sport. The
famous ‘Nehru Trophy’ Snake boat race at Punnamada lake in the district of Alleppey takes place during this season. The land of “Strobilanthes Kunthiana”
Strobilanthes Kunthiana, more locally known as “Neelakurinji” is a bushy plant with several branches. The species name Kunthiana has been derived from the River Kunthi which flows through the rich expanse of the renowned Silent Valley National Park in Kerala. It carpets the mountain slopes with it’s flowers, once in every 12 years, and so it has become a sight for many, once in a life time. The flowering season ranges between August and November, with the peak period, being September and October. The flowers are next due in the year 2018

Kerala’s grandest temple pageantry at Trichoor, includes colourful processions of Caparisoned Elephants, reverberating midnight fireworks, parasol exchange, and drum concerts called
“Panchavadyam” involving about 200 artists in the diciplines of Drum, Trumpets, Pipe and Cymbal. One can look at the years calender for the season of Onam, which falls between the month of
August and September which are considered to be the best time to visit Kerala.
