Justification

For this unit we our task was to create a sound scape based on Liverpool. Our sound scape had to last 3 minutes and had to include natural and environmental sounds, influenced by Bill Fontana’s work. So our whole class took a trip to the Albert dock and recorded sounds that could go into our sound scape. We recorded lots of things like people walking over a bridge, the sounds of a bus driving and lots more that we thought would be useful to our sound scape. The theme we decided to go with was the Beatles as we felt that the Beatles are the most famous thing to come out of Liverpool. Our groups original idea was to create a time line of the Beatles but later realised that we did not want to give away our idea of the Beatles that easily so we decided to take the most famous sections of their lives and put them into our sound scape. For example, marriages, screaming fans and when John Lennon was shot down in front of his house. During our trip to the Albert dock, we visited the Liverpool museum and recorded a show on the Beatles. We had part of this show playing in the background of our soundscape to create overlaps and levels within it. We also recorded the sound of a fan on a building; we thought this could represent their fans screaming. We also took sounds from free sound like a submarine and a gunshot as we could not record these sounds ourselves.

Key Points

This is the sound of an aeroplane fading in and then fading out.

We thought this could represent them going on a world tour and travelling to different countries. We had to edit this before we

put it into our sound scape.

This is the sound of water trickling. We thought this could represent the Albert Dock as it is Liverpool’s most famous landmark.

Here we recorded the sound of a fan. We thought this could represent the Beatles fans when they were at their most famous.

This is the sound of wedding bells. We wanted to add their personal life into it so included wedding bells as they all got married at one point in their life.

Here is the sound of a submarine. Our aim was to create a sound influenced by one of their most famous songs so we decided to choose ‘Yellow Submarine’ as it is famous worldwide.

This sound is a gunshot representing John Lennon’s death. This assassination is one of the most

famous of all time. This may give the audience an idea of what our soundscape is about.

Conclusion

Our soundscape has met our initial ideas. We have taken parts of the Beatles life and put it into one soundscape. Our initial idea was for people who listen to it, to think about what it is about and I think we have are successful with that idea as we do not give away anything specific. I also think our soundscape has met the genre we aimed to create as it is completely about the Beatles. Overall, I think the soundscape we have created has been successful.
