CHICHEN ITZA

• Chichen Itza which means “at the mouth of the well of Itza “, is the 2nd most visited archaeological site of Mexico today. • The Kukulkan Pyramid in Chichen-Itza

which known as “El Castillo” (the castle), is one of the new seven wonders of the world elected in 07.07.2007.• It is exactly 24 metres high considering

the upper platform. • Apart from the Kukulkan Pyramid, in

Chichen Itza there many other archaeological sites to visit, all carrying traces from Mayan Culture in many ways.

Chichen-Itza, now including one of the new 7 wonders of the world; the Kukulkan Pyramid, is located in the

Peninsula of Yucatan, in the Yucatan State; Mexico, between Valladolid and Merida and is just120 km from

Merida.

MEXICAN HANDICRAFTS & FOLK

ART• The most prevalent of Mexico’s crafts is

ceramics/pottery• Ceramics was considered one of the highest art

forms during the Aztec Empire, with the knowledge of making pottery said to have come from the god Quetzalcoatl himself• Weaving is a craft practiced by men, women

and children in Mexico and just about every fibre available is crafted into utilitarian objects such as placemats, baskets, hats and bags• Banderolas, or cut-paper banners, are hung in

the streets for special occasions

• Mexican handcrafted toys are mostly miniature representations of things in life, such as birds, furniture, mermaids, bullfighting scenes, carts and much more, made with materials on hand such as bulrush, wood, cloth, clay and lead.

• Leatherwork in Mexico is closely tied to the charro/vaquero, or cowboy tradition, focusing on the creation of saddles, belts and boots.

MEXICO’S SPORT ACTIVITIES

• The traditional national sport of Mexico is Charreria, which consists of a series of equestrian events. The national horse of Mexico, used in Charreria, is the Azteca

• Bullfighting, a tradition brought from Spain, is also popular in Mexico. Mexico has the largest venue for bullfighting in the world - The Plaza de Toros in Mexico City which seats 48,000 people

• Mexico is also known for its boxing tradition• Other popular recreational activities include

lucha libre (Mexican professional wrestling), baseball, fishing, scuba diving and basketball

MEXICO’S NATIONAL

DANCE

• The famous dance in Mexico is JARABE • Often called the

“Mexican hat dance” in English• The music played

either by Mariachi bands or by bands playing only string instruments • FOR EXAMPLE :

various types of guitars, harps and violin• The dress worn by

dancers meant to symbolize Mexican women and men• Women dressed in a

style called “China Poblana” and men dressed as  “Charros”

The Jarabe Dance was considered to be Mexico’s “national dance” Traditional dancers perform a sequence

of hopping steps, heel and toe tapping movements.
