Saint Giong

Temple, also

called Soc Son

Temple, is located

in Soc Son District

of Hanoi, 40kms

from the city

center. The temple

is built at the foot

of the Horse

Mountain which

was believed to be

the place where

Saint Giong

stopped for a rest

after fighting off

the invaders

restoring peace to

Vietnam...

Blessed by three natural lakes and bequeathed a

large reservoir, the site has been religiously

important since the 10th Century due to its

connection to o­ne of Vietnam’s most famous

folk-heroes.

According to the legend, Giong grew from a

child into a man in a matter of days by feasting

voraciously o­n rice, then ousted the Chinese

using his bamboo sword. The temple complex

commemorating him and Vietnam’s victory was

erected sometime around AD980, making it a

viable candidate for the much abused adjective

“ancient”.

The Soc Son Temple is surrounded by

mountains: Mt.Cao Tung to the

South, Mt. Cam to the East, Mt. Co Ngua to the

West, and the Mt. Rua and a piece of flat land to

the Southeast. In the ancient past, these mounts

were covered with thick forests. The area is also

bathed by two rivers: one following from the

North-West to the South-East, the other from the

West to the South.

Ha Temple where Soc Mount was worshipped.

It was built under the rein of king Le Dai Hanh.

Ha Temple has 3 compartments with moss, ancient

architecture and carved masterpieces.

The Temple have a big bronze statue, it weighs 7 tons,

depicts the saint in a sitting posture, hands on knees, with a

majestic and impressive facial expression.

The statue is Soc Mount who was honored as Thánh Thần

Vương. This title was carved on the top of his bronze statue’s

hat.

The statue dating to Nguyen dynasty.

Mother Temple where Saint Giong’s mother was

worshipped. Mother Temple is a small and pretty

temple with sophisticated engravings. On the temple

gate is a line written “Phù Đổng Danh Truyền

Thiên Thượng Mẫu’’. It has three compartments

.Inside the temple, mother’s statue with a gentle

expression is lacquered red and trimmed with gold.

Outside the temple, there are mother well with the

blue water. It show immense love and care of

mother. The temple was repaired and extended in

1913 under the reign of King Duy Tan.

Temple is the Dai Bi

Pagoda. Only a

small pagoda but it

has a unique

architecture.

The door flame is covered with a red pain as unchanged

following the time. The dome is high bend a little curved,

soaring up beautifully with the red tile.

Inside the pagoda are the pairs of parallel sentences for the

solemn splendor and ancient horizontal lacquered board

here.

complex architecture. Thuong Temple was built

with two tiers and eight roofs and curved eaves.

It look like a lotus. Inside the temple is a

double wooden horse. It symbolize the iron

horse and the rode of Saint Giong to expel the

enemy. There are seven status consists of Saint

Giong and bodyguard.

The Giong Festival of Phu Dong and Soc temples has

officially been recognized as an intangible cultural

heritage of humanity by the UNESCO since November

2010. UNESCO has shortly and fully recorded of the

Giong Festival as "a Viet Nam culture museum that keeps

many alluvial layers of culture and beliefs."

Hoi Giong festival is the traditional war memorial and praise of the hero Saint Giong, one quarter of the immortal folk beliefs Vietnam. Festival vividly simulate the evolution of the game and people Thanh Giong Van Lang in the fight against the enemy India, thereby raising public awareness about the form of tribal warfare antiquity; education and patriotism, martial traditions, excavations will strengthen and aspirations of independence, freedom of the nation. A bit like being held in parts of the northern plains, but the most typical is a bit like Phu Dong Temple and Temple in Soc (Ha Noi).Hoi Giong Temple in Soc (Phu Linh Commune, Soc Son district, Hanoi) to be held from March 6-8 lunar month every year. According to legend, after defeating the enemy An, Phu Linh is where the last stop before the Saint Giong flew to heaven. To commemorate the work of the Holy Spirit, where people have built Soc Relic Temple consists of 6 buildings: Temple House (aka the temple), Bi Pagoda, Temple Mau Thuong Temple (also Call to Care), Thanh Giong statue and beer.
