Spaces on board

Climbing on board a sailing boat for the first time will be like discovering a new world where things have strange names. No worries, you will soon feel at home and find all what you are used to.

There is a “dinette” (photo 1) inside the boat, i.e. the sitting room with a couch and one or more tables where you can dine. Each boat has cabins (photo 2), i.e. rooms with one or more beds (double, single or bunk beds), depending on the size of the boat. Any kitchen on board? Of course! The boat (photo 3) is equipped with a fridge, hob and oven. A bit smaller but equally practical are toilets on board which can be one or two, equipped with a washbasin and a shower.

Boat etiquette: the dos and donts Tips to appreciate the peculiarities of a vacation on a sailing boat

1) THIS BOAT IS NOT A HOTELBoats are not a hotel or a cruise ship. Space is always a big issue, so make others feel at home when interacting (e.g. where to stop for a dip) or during daily activities (e.g. what to eat for dinner).

2) NO HIGH HEELS OR HARD SOLES SHOES ON BOARDWearing shoes that might damage the boat and harm you on the boat and tender is a big no no. Do use boat shoes or the like (e.g. white-sole sneakers), or just enjoy walking barefoot.

3) SMOKINGSmoking on board is only allowed at the captain’s discretion and in specific areas on deck to safeguard the environment and respect other crew members. Do not throw cigarette butts in the sea!

4) DO NOT WASTE WATERFresh water on board is a precious asset; do not waste it.

5) THE UNKNOWN PANTRY!A small room or cupboard in which food and drinks are kept and is usually shared by an expense sharing crew (about 8-10 € per day).

Page 11: Bluewago | Sailing holiday in Friuli Venezia Giulia

11

You should know that

You can generally charge your smartphone or your electronic devices when the boat stops at the harbour, as battery is charged during navigation to supply electric current; 12 Volt for the fridge and on-board equipment. Do bring a power adapter for cigarette lighters on board.

Wi-fi is provided on many boats. Alternatively when sailing along the coast, you may be connected if you have a Wi-Fi system on your smartphone. 3G networks are often not available at sea.

You can bring your children on board even if it is wisely believed this holiday is not suitable for kids. Many boats are in fact well equipped to accommodate kids as long as you abide by the security measures indicated by the captain.

Toilets on board have a peculiar exhaust system and are equipped with manual or electrical pumps to circulate the water, eliminating the waste outside. Tubes are narrow for safety reasons; do not throw unsuitable paper and objects that may obstruct them.

Friuli Venezia Giulia

The views and landscapes of the enchanting Friuli Venezia Giulia coast change every mile of the way from Trieste to Lignano. Depart from the small village of Muggia to get to the enchanting Miramare Castle which was once the residence of the Hapsburg Court then sail by the Duino Castle, ancient manor of Trieste’s Captain. Forget about history and dive into the wilderness of the Nature Reserve of the Isonzo River Mouth, heading to the Grado lagoon, where the island of Anfora is located, a small atoll that once delineated the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the island of Grado, the ideal destination of tourism resort. Once again, the fauna in nature will surprise you at the Regional Nature Reserve Foci dello Stella in the Marano Lagoon. We will end our trip in this amazing region in Lignano Sabbiadoro, the core of beach holiday makers.

Trieste is a well assorted blend of art, culture and open air activities. Stroll through the streets of the city centre and admire the remains of the Roman Theatre and the Cathedral of San Giusto, then capture the grandeur of the square Piazza Unità and the romantic charm of Molo Audace (Audace wharf). The sea is one with the city of Trieste. You can get to the Pinegrove and the sea front of Barcola after which the Barcolana event was named; an international regatta involving thousands of boats every year from the port, located close to the city centre. The sea of Trieste is surrounded by the Carso, rich in vegetation and ideal place for long and relaxing walks.

Istria

Istria is located a few nautical miles from Friuli Venezia Giulia, the beautiful peninsula between Slovenia and Croatia. There are three amazing sceneries of the territory here: a totally white panorama, characterised by imposing calcareous rocks; one of them is ochre in colour due to its soils rich in clay and marl, extending from the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner region, and the other one is red due to the bustling ground. The beautiful villages of Portoroz Piran , and Koper will welcome you in an atmosphere of days gone past, just as when the region was under the dominion of Venice. Your stay will be accompanied by an excellent white wine and fresh fish in a unique charming setting.

Day 2 - Grignano to PortopiccoloAfter breakfast, out to discover nature and the coast of Trieste, so different from the quiet and lagoon panorama along our sailing route. The ridges along the coast overlook the sea and behold the white Miramare Castle of Maximilian of Hapsburg, Emperor of Mexico and younger brother of Francis Joseph last Austrio-Hungarian emperor. We will dock in the small legendary Marina of Grignano and after a walk in the castle’s park, we will visit the grandiose interiors of the mansion, and then have lunch of your choice ashore. Once refreshed we will sail along the karst embankment, heading to the white cliffs of Duino toward Porto Piccolo and the Castle of Duino! The Sistiana Bay welcomes us with its natural grandeur of white stone overlooking the sea and on which the old and the new castle of the Thurn und Taxis Family stands out to the West. But to the east we will admire a perfect expression of elegance and modernity: Portopiccolo, a sea-side structure, a residence for tourists, exclusive services and incomparable beauty. We have a variety of refreshment points in the bustling Sistiana bay reachable from the marina with a short and easy walk or in the exclusive resort of Porto Piccolo. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay in the port.

Day 3 - Portopiccolo to GradoAfter breakfast we only have time for a small dip in the sea and then leave the fairy-tale landscape that inspired famous poets in the past, such as Dante and Reiner Maria Rilke. We then head to Grado while admiring the white cliffs of the Dama Bianca (White Lady), while slowly leaving the rocky coast behind us and moving towards a charming landscape of yesteryear: the Grado lagoon, where we will arrive at lunch time. Time to discover the streets of the historic centre that are so similar to those of Venice! You will experience the old deeds of empires by visiting the Paleochristian Cathedral, its Baptistery and the Roman remains. Venice also reflects the charm of the Habsburg dynasty in the noble architecture of the villas along the beach: unique for a dip in the sea today as in the past! Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

The magic of history, the beauty of the coast enriched by the thousand colours of the various sea beds: a sailing itinerary to discover FVG from a privileged and exclusive standpoint. You will enjoy sailing in the Gulf of Trieste which offers various sailing itineraries to meet the needs of all; mirrors of protected sea to experience your adventure first hand (kayaking and horses in the lagoon, scuba diving in protected marine parks), and various excursion options and experiences ashore (historical, cultural, wine and food and even ultra-national nightlife). Enjoy the surprise of new discoveries from our sailing boats.

Day 1 - Welcome to Muggia! On Saturday morning arrival at our base in Muggia, where our skipper will be waiting on the pier to take us on board. After a prep briefing on our navigation plan and on-board equipment, we will set sail to discover the beauty of the Gulf of Trieste. Everything seems within reach: Slovenian Mountains and the Julian Alps on one hand and the pinewood of Grado, Punta Savudrija (HR), and Pyran (SI) on the other, which seems to embrace this eastern edge of the Upper Adriatic and surround it almost in a lake. Disembarkation at Grignano, a small marina popular among locals for having being a refuge to Maximilian of Hapsburg searching for shelter from a strong bora storm. Be it true or a legend, the place is extremely fascinating enclosed by a karst embankment characterising the coast of Trieste. At the foot of the headland is Miramare’s natural marina Reserve, where you can go deep-sea diving and take sea watching guided tours which allows you to observe a wide variety of environments. This guided tour near the Bay of Grignano and the nearby Castle of Miramare is an unforgettable experience, thanks to the breath-taking landscape from the Castle and sea watching. You can also visit the amazing park personally designed by Maximilian of Hapsburg, Emperor of Mexico and Franz Joseph Emperor of Austria’s brother. And of course the beautiful Castle of Miramare symbol of the entire city is a must see. The boat is of course at our disposal for a dip in the sea surrounded by this beautiful landscape.

Back to our base at sunset, and while sailing in this fascinating setting, we will have a refreshing drink with a snack on board enjoying the amazing view of the Gulf. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

Day 2 - Val RosandraAfter breakfast, the skipper will give us the material for an immersion in the karst and Alpine Nature Reserve of Val Rosandra-Dolina Glinščice: back around the year 1930 the famous climber Emilio Comici organized the first courses of mountain climbing a zone where the karstic plateau is etched by a valley and where the only Trieste Karst surface water flows, the Rosandra-Glinščica Torrent. You can get to the town of San Dorligo della Valle by yourself at the bottom of the valley precisely where our itinerary starts and enjoy an immersion in history walking along the remains of the Roman aqueduct, source of supply for the city of Tergeste in the first century. The reserve includes the south-eastern part of the province of Trieste and then extends beyond the border with Slovenia in the territory of the municipality of Hrpelje - Kozina. Val Rosandra represents a natural link between the sea and the hinterland and has always been used for commercial traffic. We recommend you get to the little church of Santa Maria in Siaris of the XVI century along its ancient trail and stop for refreshment in the path along the Italian side of the valley (Premuda refuge-Trattoria Bottazzo (local restaurant). You can be accompanied by an alpine nature guide if you want to.After an entire day in nature, back to the base to sip an aperitif aboard and relax lulled by our sailing boat. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay.

Day 3 - DuinoAfter breakfast we head to another area rich in history and nature sites: the white cliffs of the Castle of Duino. Sailing is a great opportunity to admire the landscape of the coast of the Gulf of Trieste. Farther away from town, you can cherish the core of maritime trades (Porto Vecchio and Porto Nuovo), the hills in town and of course its castles (San Giusto and Miramare). Beyond the Bay of Grignano we continue sailing along the harsh nature of Trieste’s coast up to Sistiana Bay where the wild and natural karst embankment overhangs the sea. Once we get to our destination we moor in an exclusive marina at lunch time: Portopiccolo, a sea-side structure with residences for tourists, exclusive services and incomparable beauty. Light lunch for us in a restaurant in the village of Portopiccolo, certainly a must visit. The day goes on with various activities. The nearby Sistiana bay is a short walk away and offers kiosks, bathing establishments and promenade along the sea to spend the afternoon and evening. If you love trekking, enjoy the excursion with a breath-taking panorama. We will climb from Sistiana bay between the road and ladders through the grove of the karst embankment until we get to the top on which you will find the beginning of the famous Rilke footpath (1700 m long, 60 m high, overlooking the sea), a panoramic promenade along the Natural Reserve of the Duino cliffs. At sunset back to the marina to change our clothes and start the evening at leisure in the exclusive Portopiccolo or in the nearby Sistiana Bay. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay in the port.

Day 4 - GradoAfter breakfast we sail to Grado, tourist centre and spa, also known as the Sun Island and the First Venice. Getting closer to the Lagoon, enjoy the orographic morphological change from the cliff to the lagoon, where the Isonzo inflow in the Adriatic Sea presents a very peculiar topography protected today by the Natural reserve. We dock at Grado at lunch time and while having a walk searching for a place to eat a snack, we discover that history also plays a leading role here: the Venetians have left invaluable traces. The early Christian Cathedral, the octagonal shaped baptistery and the ancient Roman traces are a must see. The beach resort, free beaches and Acquapark on the other hand, are furnished for sun tan lovers with quality services. Canoe trips on reservation in the nature reserve of the Cona Island or equestrian activities is also offered.Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.Day 5 - Lignano/Aprilia marittimaAfter breakfast we will drop anchor and perceive how nature expresses itself with unique fascination in the lagoons of Marano; in this way you will enter an exceptional microcosm, a real

paradise for nature lovers, which run alongside the coast of Friuli Venezia Giulia. We then head to Lignano Sabbiadoro with its enchanting beaches and bustling life, typical of a tourist and beach resort centre along the Adriatic Riviera. We go ashore, and spend the day enjoying this popular sea resort also named “The Florida in the Upper Adriatic” by E. Hemingway. Don’t miss a walk on the seafront with a wealth of open-air bars and pubs and of course where you can take long swims and sunbathe. Besides its beaches, Lignano is known for its green areas, theme parks, bike trails, botanical garden zoo and much more. Lunch and dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

Day 6 - Piran/PortorozAfter breakfast we will experience a real sailor’s day sailing up to the high seas of the fascinating pyran (Slovenia), where we will discover the coast on the other side of the Gulf of Trieste, to see it all. We dock in the lively town founded by refugees from Acquilea who fled from the coasts of Friuli Venezia Giulia following the invasion of the Huns. Piran is now a typical nice town of the Istrian Peninsula, a blend of Slavic and Italian culture. The small coloured houses and the coast language are typical of this town extending into the sea where you can enjoy a fresh fish lunch in one of the many restaurants overlooking the sea. A must visit in the evening: the nearby Portorož offers an exceptional location for an evening at the Casino and a sensational bay to be enchanted by the charm of the boats moored in the harbour by the stars and breeze.

Day 7 - Porto San RoccoAfter breakfast, we will spend the day bathing. Our experienced skipper will take us to isolated bays with constellations of intense colours, typical of clean sea beds and crystal clear waters. The cherry on the cake is a rich cultural menu of food but we refrain from eating too much because we still have an entire afternoon to relax and enjoy the unique fascination of nature. Toward evening we return to the picturesque Muggia, the only Istrian town left in Italy where the lovely town will welcome us to choose where to spend the last night on the coast of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

Day 8 - GreetingsAfter breakfast we go ashore for the last time to say goodbye and safe journey!

Muggia, Trieste Duration: 4 days / 3 night

A hit-and-run trip to fall in love with the Upper Adriatic coast scenarios: let’s enjoy the calm sailing rhythm in the lagoon and the fragrant and tasty fish dishes; be surprised by the spectacular white cliffs in the Karst overflowing into the sea and take your fill of the crisp air and foaming waves en route to the eastern borders to discover an ancient route of the most Serene Republic.

Day 1 - Welcome to Muggia!Welcome to Muggia! We are in a town which was famous for its good relationship with the Republic of San Marco and always hostile to Trieste which was part of the Habsburg empire; very few people know about this. In the afternoon, after a brief chat with our skipper at the port, we will have a walk in the nearby village and climb up on the hill of its manor house. The Castle of Muggia overlooks the port and you can enjoy a breath-taking panorama over the gulf from the hill extending on the coast of Trieste up to the Castle of Miramare. You may have an aperitif and dinner in the alleys, “calli” of Muggia’s historic centre, which is so similar to Venice. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

Day 2 - DuinoAfter breakfast we will drop anchor and head to the Castle of Duino and the legendary manor house of the Dama Bianca (White Lady)! No worries, as our tour will not be limited to history: an exclusive new marina will welcome us for the mooring in a frame of charme and relax: we are at Portopiccolo! Aperitif and light lunch, then off for a dip or a walk downtown. We have several options in the afternoon: we could sail along the coast of the karst region, plunging into the sea by alternating lush vegetation to bitter calcareous rocks or enjoy the sun and sea of Portopiccolo or the animated Sistiana bay nearby. You can admire the town of Duino by sailing in the waters of the Gulf, dominated by the homonymous Castle, majestic manor house of the Thurn and Taxis family, or explore the neighbourhood by strolling in the luxuriant and wild nature through

Starting from

Muggia, Trieste Duration: 3 days / 2 night

A weekend to discover the beauty of the Gulf of Trieste, among the magic castles of Duino, Miramare and San Giusto.

Day 1Arrival in the marina of Muggia on Friday afternoon, short briefing with the skipper, then out for the first sail in the Gulf of Trieste. The highlights of this land can be perceived from the sea: the industrial area where the container terminal port stands out - a strategic area which was modernised and dates back to the distant 1719 - the iron works of Servola, Illycaffè plants - world leader in the sector and heir of the historic coffee Stock exchange in Trieste, the transalpine pipeline that conveys the crude oil downloaded from tankers up to northern Europe, etc. and then the noble soul of the finance world and trade in the past, the historical centre of Trieste overlooking the elegant seashore and the grandiose palaces which prove Trieste was once an economic power, including the famous Piazza Unità d’Italia. Admire the town of Muggia, the village of fishermen faithful to Venice and always hostile to Trieste and then into the Slovenian waters with only a 47 km coastline enclosing dense chapters of recent history of disputed territories still loved so much today. An aperitif in the midst of the sea while sailing back. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay at the port.

Day 2After breakfast we will drop anchor and head toward the Castle of Miramare! A whole day dedicated to the sea and to the charm of navigation on a sailing boat! Possibility to go downtown for lunch in a restaurant and refreshment, and then off again to enjoy the waves! And how can one resist to the charm of an aperitif at sunset cutting through the waves of the Gulf? Once back to the marina, a walk downtown in search of a little restaurant for dinner.

Day 3Day to rediscover the thoughtlessness of a dip in the gulf or bathing in the numerous, popular and very extravagant bathing establishments of the coast! i.e..: Did you know that people here go to swim at the “Pedocin”? This is an Austro-Hungarian municipal establishment which has maintained the tradition of dividing the beach with a wall between men and women! Relax on board until lunchtime when we go ashore and greet our skipper hoping to return soon. A walk in the great piazza Unità d’Italia and in the old town is recommended behind the city hall, where there are various places to stop for dinner.

Lignano Duration: 3 days / 2 night

A weekend to discover the multi-faceted and two-sided life of the FVG lagoon, from the nightlife of the crowded trendy clubs of Lignano, to the sober nostalgic routine life of the fishermen in the “casoni” or cottages, to the noble elegance of the town of Grado. Enjoy all this with the golden colour of the sand and silent waves of the sea that distinguishes this stretch of coast…

Day 1Early in the afternoon we get to our mooring point in Lignano Sabbiadoro . Our skipper awaits us and welcomes us on board. After a short briefing, out to start enjoying sailing along the coast of the renowned seaside resort. This is a unique opportunity for a refreshing dip, sun tan and an aperitif on board in the company of the waves, then a walk downtown to experience the nightlife of Lignano and to choose a restaurant where you can taste the typical and tasty fish dishes. Dinner of your choice and overnight stay on board.

Day 2After breakfast we spend the day discovering the charm of the lagoon between Lignano and Grado: The Marano Lagoon. The extraordinary beauty of this location and inestimable value of the landscapes separated from the Adriatic Sea, encloses a protected area: the Nature Reserve and Oasis “Mouth of the river Stella” housing the enchanting village of “casoni”, or fishermen’s cottages. These are buildings made of reeds and wood. Then off we go to the boundary between the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea to reach the enchanting town of Grado. Arrival late in the morning, ready for a walk in the historical center between the Roman remains, the camp of the Patriarchs, the Paleochristian jewels, the Paleochristian Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, the Baptistery and Santa Maria delle Grazie. Grado Duration: 3 days / 2 night

Day 1 - Embarkation Boarding Friday afternoon and time to meet our skipper. Briefing on the boat and our weekend plans, then off we go downtown, walking through the narrow streets of the renowned spa tourist centre to admire its ancient history: Grado was once the roman port at the service of Aquileia and grew when it sheltered the inhabitants of the hinterland fleeing from the hordes of the Huns led by Attila. This town faced various misfortunes and new experiences at sea; it was threatened by the pirates of Dalmatia and was saved with a brutal naval battle by the Venetian fleet at the end of the nineteenth century. Grado then became a fishing village, and still is, then passed from the Austrian Hapsburgs to Italy. Traces of its history are visible in every corner of the centre from its constructions built in various historical periods. Dinner will be eaten in a restaurant of your choice and the night will be spent on board.

Day 2 - SaturdaySaturday after breakfast, we will take off for a day at sea away from the lagoon along the crowded dam and the popular beach full of holidaymakers. The hustle and bustle in town can already be perceived for the upcoming celebration, but we prefer to get away and enjoy the peace of the open sea. We are alone facing the amazing coast and sea: the Gulf of Trieste surrounded by the first promontories of the Istrian peninsula on one hand, the Alps and the beauty of the karst hills on the other, the distant bustle of the city on the horizon. You can have a dip in the sea and go sailing with the help of our skipper; seize this opportunity to know more about the sea in this area. In the late afternoon we will go back to the lagoon and enjoy a drink on board; after that we will head downtown in a restaurant of your choice and sleep on board.

Day 3 - SundayEarly and quick breakfast on Sunday morning, then off we go to follow the procession of boats and fishing boats, dressed with flags, to the Barbana Island and renew the ancient vow to the Virgin that saved the town from the terrible plague epidemic. According to this vow, every year and perpetually, at least one person from each family of Grado is to take part in the pilgrimage, across the lagoon to reach the small island, to ask the Madonna of Barbana for forgiveness (the Perdon). This is a unique, spectacular and fascinating event of local traditions and religious history, a grand procession of boats dressed with flags, always led by the bishop himself. After the procession, we still have time to enjoy the tasty local cuisine for lunch and of course a day at the beach. See you soon!
