Working with files is much the same as working with folders. If you are not careful, you can put files in the wrong folder or forget what you named them.

• If you rewrite or create a new version of a document, you may want to rename it. The easiest way to do this is to add a date to the title. That way, you know the file with the most recent date is the most up to date document. For example, when updating my resume, I rename them, i.e. Resume6_27_10, Resume2_12_11.

In this activity you will move a file by copying it, then pasting it. We will then practice renaming and deleting the file.

•Note: First, we need to create a file to work with.

Step 1: Open up Microsoft Word.

Step 2: Type your name in the document.

Step 3: Click of the File button, then choose Save As.

Step 4: Click the My documents folder, then click the folder you named “Your Name sample pictures.” In the File Name box, title you document, “Your Name’s File”.

Step 5: Click the Save button.

Step 6: Close Microsoft Word.

Now that you have a file to work with…

Step 1: Browse to your My Document folder and open the Your Name sample pictures folder.

Step 2: Click the Your Name sample pictures folder once, then click the file named Your Name’s File.

Step 3: Click the Edit menu, then choose Copy to copy the Your Name’s File file.

Step 4: Return to the My Documents folder.

Step 5: Click the Edit menu, then choose Paste. The document is added to your folder.

Step 6: Open My Documents folder, then click the Your Name’s File file.

Step 7: Click the File menu, then choose Rename.

Step 8: Click the Your Name’s File file and type the new name “Your Name’s File2” Then press the Enter key.

Step 9: In the same My Documents folder, click the Your Name’s File2 file, then press Delete on the keyboard.

Step 10: In the Confirm File Delete box, click Yes.

Tech Tip

•Did you accidentally delete a file you needed? Not to worry! To recover a deleted file, double-click the Recycle Bin icon. Then click the deleted file or folder. In the Properties window, click Restore. The file or folder will reappear in its original place.

•To empty the Recycle Bin, double-click the Recycle Bin icon. Click the File menu, and then choose Empty Recycle Bin. When you delete an item from the recycle bin, it is permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
