#1: ITIL® Functions and Processes don’t fit

the digital enterprise.

Highly disruptive market entrants are overturning long established business models

New patterns of technology procurement,

ownership and deployment also result


Case against ITIL

“New business and organizational models, coupled with new ways of buying, owning and operating technology, means that the fundamental structure of ITIL itself is no longer relevant ”


Is ITIL Really Dead?

• Will people still design, deploy, manage, update, and retire business services?

• Will the integrity and performance of those services impact business performance?

• Will there still be incidents, problems, changes, releases, configurations, and assets to track, etc.?

“A timely response to a change in market conditions or corporate strategy that affords a competitive advantage”

Increasing pressure to reduce service delivery and update times

Demand for greater business unit empowerment and self-service

Delivery times measured in minutes not weeks, in some cases real-time


Case against ITIL

“ITIL is big, unwieldy and was written in a time when deadlines were measured in months not minutes. Business has moved on and ITIL hasn’t caught up.”


Perhaps a little ITIL…

• Always remember that ITIL is a means to an end and never the end – do just enough ITIL to achieve your objective(s)

• Have you ever witnessed AGILITY without CONTROL (hint: it doesn’t end well)

• Automation can play a significant role in ensuring precision with speed. But automation is only possible with a very mature process


#3: ITIL® Won’t support The Internet of Things


Internet of Things

“Technology assets outside the scope of traditional IT that are IP enabled and connected to the enterprise network ”

e.g. Networked manufacturing equipment, sensors, smart meters, vehicle fleets etc. etc.

A subset of the more general Internet of Things, but focused on commercial or institutional applications

Tend not to be owned and managed by traditional IT teams. More likely owned by Business Units. Volumes are increasing exponentially…

“The business side of The Internet of Things will soon come to dominate in the enterprise and ITIL will have nothing to offer”


• If an asset is operationally significant enough that you care about its stability and integrity then it needs to be managed

• ITIL has never cared what “things” are managed and most of the guidelines would be unchanged

• People have been using the basic ITIL principles to manage non-traditional IT for years


#4: ITIL® Won’t (Can’t) Scale


Scale

“The explosion of network enabled devices will create a technology infrastructure of unprecedented scale and complexity”

5 billion connected things in 2015 – 25 billion by 2020

By 2020, there will be more than 44 billion terabytes of data

The number of enterprise applications optimized for

mobility will quadruple by 2016

“ITIL was conceived before the era of digital transformation and didn’t predict the explosion in technology infrastructure. The processes will break as device volumes increase exponentially ”


Time to Pick & Choose

• ITIL contains no intrinsic constraints on the scale of the operation under management

• There will be lots of devices and things but how much is individually mission-critical?

• Automation and Abstraction will be key: Automated management of tiers of infrastructure


#5: ITIL® and DevOps are Incompatible.

IT shops must choose one or the other.


DevOps

“DevOps is a software development method that emphasizes continual deployment of incremental releases

Aims to accelerate the lifecycle of software development and provide a smooth transition into operations

Seeks to maximize the predictability, efficiency, security, and maintainability of operational processes.

Incorporates Agile, SCRUM, Sprints and other

development methodologies with QA and Ops Best Practice

“ITIL has focused totally on Ops since its first version. ITIL has left Dev to the coders. Development & Operations are procedurally and philosophically opposed and never the twain shall meet”

ITIL & DevOps can Co-Exist

• The Goal of ITIL is successful service delivery

• ITIL clearly references the value of Agile-based approaches

• Confusion can arise when organizations strive to go ‘Agile everywhere’

• Dev and Ops are now on the same page. The case for DevOps is too compelling to ignore


In Summary…

• DevOps is definitely the good-looking new kid. But it’s more than just a pretty face.

• DevOps and its mantra of continuous delivery marks the end of the Waterfall method. Today’s digital enterprises must be truly Agile to remain competitive.

• But the basics of IT, the blocking & tackling, have not really changed.

• A solid ITIL foundation can underpin a fast-moving IT shop and protect its investment in the future.

• True creativity is built on a rock-solid and dependable infrastructure.
