Asphaltic concretes with fluxed bitumen have long been tested to repair pavements. Eurovia has

now breathed new life into the technique.

As part of its plant-based fluxing agent and warm mixes research programme, Eurovia has

developed a comprehensive range of asphalt mixes with plant-based fluxing agents: Viaself® Fv.

These high environmental value materials are used to maintain flexible pavements under

moderate traffic and carry out one-off repairs.

Viaself® Fv is a range of asphalt mixes that can be laid at temperatures ranging from their production temperature to ambient temperature.

Each type of mix within the range has been designed and formulated to achieve workability and appearance similar to those of conventional hot mixes.

Laying can be deferred and the material can be stored ready to use for up to 2 months. Viaself® Fv is made in a special production process, in continuous or batch mixing plants, at a temperature of 40 to 120°C.

The excellent workability of Viaself® Fv provides very broad flexibility of use. It can be laid by paver or grader as well as manually. Compaction equipment is identical to that used for hot and warm mixes.

Viaself® Fv can be conventionally laid by machine, and it is also especially suitable for reprofiling edges and for emergency repairs of damage such as potholes, trench reinstatement, footpath repairs, etc.

Note that this range of mixes has been frequently employed by Eurovia Brittany in projects carried out on islands off the coast, with the mix manufactured on the mainland.

Viaself® Fv is made of a 0/4, 0/6, 0/10 or 0/14 dense-graded aggregate skeleton coated with a specially formulated fluxed bitumen.

The binder employed to produce Viaself®Cé Fv is a 70/100 or 160/220 bitumen plastified through the addition of an agro-chemical oil. Unlike petrochemical or petroleum oils, this plant-based oil does not evaporate but hardens in place, on the pavement, through oxidation in air.

The bitumen with plant-based fluxing agent used in Viaself® Fv is produced by a special process in Eurovia binder plants. It was designed to achieve coating viscosity at low temperature that is close to that of pure bitumens used in conventional hot bituminous material processes. This coating binder complies with the NF EN 15322 standard.

Plant-based oils were selected for their fluxing capacity and their ability to oxidise after laying so as to achieve more or less rapid cohesion depending on the application.

A comprehensive range of fluxed asphalt mixes has been developed by optimizing the nature and plant-based fluxing agent content of the products. Fluxing agent content, and hence binder type, is selected according to laying conditions.

The Viaself® Fv range covers several products suitable for a variety of applications:

> Viaself® C Fv for surface courses,

> Viaself® R Fv for reprofiling,

> Viaself® S Fv for one-off repairs.
