Global Trend of Natural Disasters

In late 1990´s several powerful

natural disasters occurred in different

parts of the world.

Additional threats such as global

warming, environmental degradation

and rapid urbanization makes

millions of people more vulnerable to

natural hazards every year.

The trend during the last three

decades shows an increase in the

number of natural hazard events and

an increase in the number of affected

populations.

2005 the economic damages caused

by naturel disasters was 160BUSD

Improved Weather Services – Benefit Examples

Improved Disaster Preparedness

Estimate for flood forecasting: 10-35 % savings in flood damage as a result for improved hydro-meteorological forecast

Agriculture

Crop management and irrigation decisions improved => Increased crop yield and quality

Optimized seeding times according to weather forecasts => Increased crop yield

Transportation

Aviation, maritime, road & rail safety and logistics improvement => savings

Health care

Some epidemic can be forecasted based on weather forecasts => early treatment.

Improved Weather Services – Additional Benefit Examples

Energy production

Hydropower & wind power production

optimization

Construction industry

It is estimated that the additional

construction cost because of weather

is three percent of the value of the

construction work

Management of water resources

improved

Risks affecting recreation and tourism

reduced

Development of the commercial use of

meteorological products

Improved Weather Service – Justification for the Investment

International studies on the benefits and costs of improved

meterological services agree that strengthening the NMHS

must not be seen as an expenditure but as an investment.

According to WMO the average cost benefit ratio in

investing in development and strengthening of hydro-

meteorological services is on average 1 to 7.
