VOCABULARY Ch. 1 part a

WriteIn your Cornell Notes

Why do I have to write vocabulary?

Research has shown that writing vocabulary helps us remember the words and what they mean.

The more times you write it, the more familiar you become with it, and the easier it is to remember.

Writing it on paper…sort of writes it on your brain too!

EXPERIMENT A procedure that

tests a hypothesis by collecting information under controlled conditions.

HYPOTHESIS An explanation for

a question or a problem that can be formally tested.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE In an experiment,

the condition that is changed because it affects the outcome of the experiment.

CONTROL In an experiment,

the standard in which all of the conditions are kept the same.

CONTROL GROUP In an experiment,

the group that is the control for the experiment.

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP In an experiment,

the group in which conditions are changed or upon which experiments are performed. This is done to see what happens and compared to the control group.

THEORY Explanation of

natural phenomenon supported by a large body of scientific evidence obtained from many different investigations and observations.

BIOLOGY The branch of

science that studies life and seeks to provide an understanding of the natural world.

ORGANISM Anything that

possesses all the characteristics of life; all organisms have an orderly structure, produce offspring, grow, develop, and adjust to changes in the environment.

HOMEOSTASIS Organism’s regulation

of its internal environment to maintain conditions suitable for survival; a characteristic of all living things.

The process of maintaining equilibrium in an organism’s internal environment.

ORGANIZATION In biology: the

orderly structure of cells in an organism; a characteristic of all living things.

RESPONSE An organism’s reaction

to a change in its internal or external environment.

Example: If it would get very cold, you would put on your coat. That would be your “response”.
