INTRODUCTION
Basic Knowledge of ‘EMU’ An EMU consists of 4 or 5 units. A unit comprises of 3 coaches. So there are 12 and 15 coaches EMU
running in Mumbai. The vehicle is equipped with a state-
of-the-art three-phase drive with asynchronous Motor
Types.
There are two types of Basic Unit: End Basic Unit Middle Basic Unit
End Basic Unit Motor Coach (MC) Driving Trailer
Coach (DTC) Trailer Coach (TC)

Major Equipments of DTC
Control Technology There are two Central Control Units (CCU). The Units are connected to each other via
an MVB Bus. If the MVB bus is not available despite of
this fallback, the vehicle can be operated in degraded operation via the rescue drive mode.
All the switches , buttons and devices are connected to a KLIP station
Diagnostic Display Support The MMI (Man-Machine Interface) is
installed in the driver's cab in the DTC. The states of functions are indicated to
the driver by means of coloured icons. Automatic vigilance device has been
implemented via the master controller. In rescue drive mode, the automatic
application of the brakes is immediately initiated.
Pantograph
Types of Pantograph : Diamond Shape – For DC rakes. Bow Type – For AC/DC rakes. There are two types of Bow used :A. Schunk metal & carbon India ltd - used in
Siemens rake only.B. Stone India ltd - used in Siemens rake &
BHEL rakes
Stone India ltd Pantograph
The Pantograph has three articulations : 1.Lower Articulation 2.Middle Articulation 3.Upper Articulation
1. LOWER ARTICULATION It contains : Base Frame Main Springs Lower Arm Yoke Assembly Push rod Assembly

Operation
In it’s lowered position the main Springs are extended by pulling the lower arm rotation by servomotor and its insulator mechanism assembly. When its tension is released the pantograph raises.
Raising : When the compressed air is admitted into the air motor
cylinder The cylinder piston compresses the holding down spring
inside the air motor It displaces the slotted bar then permits the rotation of
the horizontal spindle of the lower arm under the action of the working springs.
Thus the pantograph raises until collector head reaches the overhead wire.
The pantograph balance is maintained through the working of the main springs
slotted bar insulator

HOLDING DOWN SPRING
air motor cylinder
Piston rod
Lowering : Releasing the compressed air in the
cylinder causes the piston to return under the action of the holding springs.
The slotted link pulls the horizontal spindle and lowers the pantograph.
Air pressure required for complete extension of the piston rod will be 5 kg/cm2.
Graphite grease is applied on the pan for smooth operation
Static Adjustment : The static load of the pantograph is the
load applied by the pantograph on the contact wire. The load must be as constant as possible through out the entire contact range 0.5 to 2.0m of the pantograph. It is adjusted by four static screws.
1.5m 1.0m 1.75m 0.5m
Transverse flexibility of the pantograph : Raise the pantograph to a height of
1.5m Pull the upper articulation
transversely with a force of 50 kg
weight suspended on a rope passing over a pulley.
The displacement of the bow should be 36 mm + 5mm.
