Third Partial Review

TIPS ON GOOD GRADES: Review your notes, class examples and videos. Look over the chapters: 8,9 and 10 (11 may also be included make sure you check) Ask questions!

Instructions: Answer the entirereview. This will help you prepare for the exam. Please be neat and orderly to avoid deductions. Be specific about your answers; if I can’t find them I WILL NOT grade them. The Review will be due the day of your exam.

I. Differentiate between Interatomic and intermolecular. Give examples II. Define the following types of bonds and show an example for each:

1. Ionic 2. Covalent

a. Nonpolar b. Polar c. Coordinate

III. What are dipole forces? IV. What are polyatomic ions? V. Draw the Lewis Structure of the following compounds. Show the

chemical formula: 1. Bisulfate 2. Borate 3. Carbon tetrafluoride 4. Silane (Silicon tetrahydride)

VI. Give the oxidation numbers of the following compounds. Show the rules used to determine the numbers:

1. Silve (I) Cyanide (hint: give the most electronegative atom the negative oxidation number in the polyatomic ion. Look at its valence orbital to determine its oxidation number)

2. Phosphine (Phosphorous tetrahydride) 3. Ammonium Chloride 4. Diphosphorous pentoxide

VII. Name the following compounds according to the IUPAC Rules: 1. TiBr3

2. Cu3P 3. SnSe2 4. SF2 5. H2

VIII. Give the formula of the following compounds: 1. Lithium hydroxide 2. Nitrous acid 3. Hydrobromic acid 4. Cobalt (II) hydroxide

IX. Read the statement below and identify the types of inorganic compounds. Give the name, formula, and classification where necessary.

1. I have two elements. One of the elements only needs one more electron to have a filled valence orbital. It is ALWAYS found as a diatomic molecule, and as a compound it is used in toothpaste. It is a very electronegative atom. The second element has metallic bonding and is found in milk to make our bones strong. I reacted these two to make a salt.

X. Complete the following reactions. Identify the type of reaction and balance the equation where necessary:

1. NaNO3 + _______O Pb_______ + Na2O 2. V2O5 + ________ Ca_______ + _______S5 3. S8 + ________ SO2 4. Fe + AgNO3 ________ + _________ 5. NaOH (aq) + H2SO4 ________(aq) + ________ 6. ______(s) + F2 (g) Ca_____(s)
