IV. Experiencing the “Four Favorites”

A. First off we will start with FaceBook because it is the most publicized

1. In the time we have allotted, I would like you just to follow along with me.

a. Here is what you will want to do.

(1) Set up your FaceBook Profile. Use as much or as little detail as you wish. Here is where you will also set up your privacy setting. Upload a casual photo.

(2) The next step is to set up your business page. Here you will be a little more

formal, and you will need to remember that as a REALTOR® you will need to be a little more conservative. Use a more professional photo, etc.

b. Later you will see where everything starts to connect.

2. If you don’t have a FaceBook account set up yet, we will discuss this individually after the class.

B. Now let’s take a look at Wordpress, the real engine behind the way I work with social media. Your way may be different, and that is okay.

1. If you do not have an account, just follow along.

2. Also, if you aren’t already set up, think long and hard about what you want to name your blog. When you come up with a good idea, you can check to see if it has been taken. If it hasn’t, then you should purchase the domain name.

3. Remember at this point WordPress is free and you may set up multiple accounts. So, if you start out with one and it doesn’t seem to fit your personality, you can go to a backup.

IV. The “Four Favorites” [cont’d]

C. At this point we are going to take a quick look at LinkedIn, the professional networking platform.

1. Just as with all the rest, you will need to go through the process of setting up your profile.

2. However, with this profile you will want to really play your power hand. Go into detail about your

work experience, background, degrees, interests, etc.

3. Once this is completed, you will want to search through LinkedIn for all of your past clients to see if they are on LinkedIn. (The same goes for the other networks we have

been discussing.)

4. The big difference here is that you are going to be building professional networks, local vendors, and out of the area real estate agents. Why not local agents you might ask?

D. Now comes another of the big ones that you all have heard about, Twitter.

1. Once again set up your account and profile. We won’t get into design or extras in this class. However,

you can customize your background, etc.

2. You will find out quickly with Twitter that it has a cadence and language all its own.

3. It is a good idea just to sign up, pick a few people you know to follow, and ask them for a few recommendations. Then just sit back and watch or listen for a while.

E. Now you are probably wondering how you will find time to work with four separate programs. Let’s first look at Twitter.

V. Working With Multiple Programs

A. The secret to working with multiple programs is trying not to learn them all at one time. Unless you are a really fast learner and have some technical expertise, I would recommend a four week start up, one platform per week.

B. Once you have set up your first account, you might want to go ahead and set up all the profiles on the programs you have chosen to use.

C. Once that is completed, spend 30 minutes a day with that one program, for example, FaceBook.

D. Repeat the process with all the programs you want to use. You might find that you catch on faster than you thought you would, and you can progress through them more quickly.

VI. Summary

• We have briefly reviewed four social media platforms. Now we will become basically acquainted with two more platforms that you might elect to use.

1.Tweetdeck: used to combine four or more platforms on one screen.

2.FourSquare: a location-based mobile application similar to Tweetdeck, but with limitations.

• Now that we have completed our preview of the four most prominent platforms, let’s take a few minutes to discuss the effective use of social media without spending the entire day on the keyboard.

VI. Summary [cont’d]

A. Finally, are there any questions?

C. An important reminder: All use of electronic business communications by REALTORS® must comply with DPOR advertising and marketing regulations as well as Article 12 of the Code of Ethics.

E. In conclusion, the programs that we have previewed today might be a thing of the past by next year. However, keep in mind any new programs will use these platforms to build upon and enhance their use.
