DESCRIPTION
ACES Fire Extenguisher class held on the AU campus April 18, 2008
Citation preview
Extension employees on the AU campus joined AU Fire Safety Program Manager Kenny Harrison to learn how to use fire extinguishers. Left to right: Andrea Musso, Patti Golden, Mathew Smidt, Raymond Kessler, Glenda James, Sherry Sydnor, and Kenny Harrison.
Class ABC (dry chemical) extinguishers are lined up and ready for action. The large extinguisher in the back is an APW (air pressurized water) extinguisher.
Raymond Kessler held the fuel-soaked torch as Instructor Harrison lit it. Let the demonstration begin!
Our contained fire was lit…
This is how you extinguish a small fire. Step 1: Pull the pin. Step 2: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Step 3: Squeeze the trigger. Step 4: Sweep across the area.
Sherry Sydnor learned that spraying over the top of the fire doesn’t do much good—you’ve got to hit the base to smother the fire.
Aim at the base of the fire.
Uh Oh! Water won’t work for this fire (water doesn’t work on combustible liquids such as kerosene or gasoline) or on grease fires.
Emily Kling discovers that the ABC (Class 1) type extinguisher works better than water.
Glenda James learns that you’ve got to get closer to the fire to reach the base.
Andrea Musso moves in to douse the flames.
Patti Golden sweeps the fire area.
Mathew Smidt ensures that the fire is out.
Thus ends the demonstration.
• Leave the area, taking keys and medications with you if possible.• Activate the alarm pull station as you leave the building.• Notify others as you leave.• Call 911 to report the emergency AFTER you are safely outside.• Use a portable fire extinguisher to attempt to extinguish a SMALL fire (small garbage can) IF
• The fire alarm pull station has been activated• 911 has been notified• You have been trained to use the fire extinguisher
