SEMANTIC ENERGY

THE PROBLEM - BUILDINGS

• Buildings account for ~70% of electricity consumption (US)

• Reducing and managing this will make a huge impact

• Very Complex picture

• Needs to be characterized

Page 3: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

THE PROBLEM – ENERGY NETWORKSFROM THIS:

THE PROBLEM – ENERGY NETWORKSTO THIS:

Page 5: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IS KEY

• Characterizing building information

• Managing energy networks

• Load balancing

• This happens, but is not connected

• The Web Can connect!

Page 6: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING

• Goes WAY beyond CAD

• Represent building INFORMATION as well as drawings

• Allows us to do much more analysis and management!

• Gaining serious traction in construction

Page 7: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING• Complex, but can manage the entire building workflow

Page 8: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

BIM INTEROPERABILITY IMPORTANT• Different Domain Experts can carry out their own work

• Links with others

• This is now beginning to happen

• Based on Web technologies (XML) – Still tend to be single model focused.

• Growing support.

CIM (IEC 61970)

• Data standard for Energy Networks

• Can represent energy generation, conversion technologies, networks, distribution technologies, financial details and more.

• Can be represented in XML form.

• Currently used by various Utility companies world wide.

• Extensible

Page 21: Semantic Energy - Malcolm Murray

• Focused on modeling future energy grids

• 16 partners across Europe

• Completed last September

• UHI / Greenspace were involved in regional modelling and information representation

THE SEMANTIC WEB

• Basically an evolution of the World Wide Web.

• Concept introduced by Tim Berners Lee in 1999.

• Extends the scope of the World Wide Web to manage data.

• Connects data across many sources.

SEMANTIC ENERGY

• Semantic Web based platform representing building and energy related information.

• Currently a proof of concept developed by Greenspace.

• gbXML based ontology along with others.

• New way of organising energy information

• Extremely Scalable
