STEREO - A

Presentation Notes
The most energetic solar event that we know of occurred in September, 1859. It is known as the “Carrington Event” after a British astronomer who observed the storm and studied its effects. Auroras were seen over the Caribbean. It was said that you could read a newspaper by light from the aurora in the US. Telegraph lines sparked and started fires. This video clip is data recorded on STEREO-A, a spacecraft in nearly the same orbit as Earth that is currently on the other side of the sun. On July 23, 2012, there was a flare and subsequent coronal mass ejection (CME) that was determined to be a large as the one that caused the Carrington Event. Luckily for all of us, it was directed away from the Earth.
