RecycloviAIN SITU PAVEMENT RECYCLING
The solution that revitalises roads
RECYCLOVIA PROTECTING NATURE WITH SUSTAINAbLE QUALITYGiven the need to conserve natural resources, transport resources over long distances to
worksites and regulations restricting landfilling, road maintenance companies are turning to
techniques that cut back on the use of added materials. The recent Grenelle environment Forum
agreements have brought these concerns into even sharper focus and are driving the effort to
recycle, reduce raw material and energy consumption and utilise by-products.
Against this backdrop, eurovia has developed Recyclovia, an in situ recycling process for flexible
and semi-rigid pavements that can be used to refurbish surface courses and if need be reinforce
pavement structures to a depth of about 150mm. Recyclovia is based on experience gleaned
by Probisa, eurovia’s Spanish subsidiary, since 1998. The product is laid by a single compact
machine.
KEYbENEFITS
A pavement maintenance product that protects the environment
Savings of non-renewable raw materials
Rapid refurbishment of damaged, worn and cracked pavements
limited disruption for road users
KEYFEATURES
Up to 50 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
Optimum laying rate of3,500m2/day
Over 6 million m2
laid to date
Energy and aggregate savings typically
amount to 20% and more
Recyclovia is a cold technique that consists in breaking up the existing pavement, treating the planed materials in situ with an emulsion (Recyclovia E) or foamed bitumen (Recyclovia M) and then spreading and trimming the new mix. To perform these operations, Eurovia adapted the most efficient commercially available machine.
Recyclovia restores the structural and surface characteristics of damaged pavements; it constitutes an alternative of choice to conventional road reinforcement and overlaying techniques, especially for roads with low to medium traffic.
AN INTELLIGENT ALTERNATIVEWITH MULTIPLE bENEFITS
ENVIRONMENT FIRST
Recyclovia meets the environmental goal of reducing the utilisation of added natural materials. It obviates the need to landfill materials and to use virgin aggregates. It also results in a substantial reduction in the volume and direct and indirect environmental impact of transport. In addition, the process uses no heat in production and laying, which also reduces energy consumption.
AND USERS TOO
Recyclovia projects can be carried out rapidly, at a laying rate of up to 3,500 sq. metres per day. The machine employed is very compact, limiting the disruption experienced by users. Moreover, Recyclovia cuts application time by 30% compared to a conventional asphalt mix reinforcement project.

A HIGHLY EFFICIENT PROCESS
To choose the right binder and define the formulation of the recycled material, it is essential to perform a thorough prior analysis of the existing structure – pavement condition and geometry, nature and thickness of pavement layers, identification of planings, dosing and grade of bitumen in coated materials, deflection, traffic, etc.
A structural design calculation then determines the optimum recycling thickness and the nature and thickness of the surface course to be laid subsequently.
> Slow-breaking emulsion (60 or 65% bitumen) specially formulated and produced in the group’s factories
> Foamed bitumen produced by injecting a small quantity of water into a selected hot bitumen.
Each of these two binders can be used for the recycling classes presented in the French Setra’s «In-situ Recycling of Existing Pavements» technical guide dated July 2003.
Depending on the formulation, mineral additives can be injected during laying to increase the mechanical performance of the treated material.
The surface area treated every year with Recyclovia
is steadily increasing in both France and Spain, confirming the ability of the technique to meet current environmental and economic goals.
COMPELLING RESULTS
The special 800 HP machine used to lay Recyclovia performs all the tasks included in the process: planing to break up the existing materials, production of foam bitumen (if used), dosing, binder injection and mixing with the planed materials, dosing and spreading of any mineral additives, adjustment as appropriate of water content, homogenisation, mixing, spreading and trimming of treated materials by means of a paver screed.Up to 2.20 metres width treated per passSupply of binder by tanker truckSuitable conventional heavy compaction train to finish the operationEmulsion-based seal coatRe-trafficking pending application of the final surface course after two or three weeks of treated material "curing".
