Low Cost 1” Floppy Now Supported on the DS10 System with Unix: (VMS and Linux previously supported on 7/8/02)

Formal support has been announced for a 16X HH DVDROM option on selected AlphaServers, including ES40, ES45 (to be 100% embedded in the commercial version of this platform in July), and the GS series. Support for DS10 will be added in the next month or so. The option part number is 3X-PBXRV-BA, and this option is immediately available. As we found and fixed a Tru64 Unix bug that was resident in the driver, there are formal patch kits and Early Release patches required and available from the indicated site, supporting all versions back to 4.0f. On OpenVMS, the minimum version supported is V7.2-1H.

1. Please ensure the latest Unix patch kits are installed prior to installing any of the CSPs below. The CSPs can be found at the following URL:

The NSS Fibre Channel Switch Team has recently introduced the 2Gb capable Fibre Channel Switches.

The switches affected and the new End Of Life dates are shown below. (Table 1.) Also shown are the replacement 2 Gb capable switches. The 2 Gb switches are operational either in 1 Gb or 2 Gb mode and are backward compatible to the 1 Gb switches.

Also relevant to this announcement is the fact that the 2 Gb switches require different cabling due to the transition from GBICs (Gigabit Interface Converters) for the 1 Gb Switches to SFPs (Small Form Factor Plugables) for 2 Gb Switches. Therefore, different

cabling is needed depending on whether you are connecting between 1 Gb devices, between 1 Gb and 2 Gb devices or between 2 Gb devices. Part number information to assist in cable management as well as addtional information with regard to available options are shown in Table 2 – Table 5..

Abstract

Customers need to understand how SAN (storage area network) and NAS (network attached storage) technologies can be used together to complement and optimize the way they use storage. The Scalable Reference SAN with NAS solution describes a configuration that incorporates a SAN to handle data management, data performance, and scalability tasks with a NAS file server for data sharing between multiple operating systems.

Scalable Reference SAN with NAS provides the following advantages:· A SAN with support for heterogeneous servers, high availability, and

sophisticated data protection including snapshots, clones, and remote data mirroring.

· A NAS file server that serves data to multiple users and that acts as a gateway, bringing the benefits of the SAN’s highly available and reliable storage to systems not directly connected to the fibre channel infrastructure.

· Centralized management, which allows customers to significantly decrease the effort required to manage their storage infrastructure.

The intended audience is made up of IT administrators, who know basic administrative procedures and file-sharing protocols for server, network installations, and SAN administration.

Network View V2.0B is now available for download. Also available are updated agents for various operating systems. NV V2.0B is a no charge product update for customers who currently have versions 2.0 or 2.0A. Most notable updates for Network View V2.0B is support for Enterprise Virtual Array V2.0. Other added support is for new Brocade and McData switches along with HBA and OS agent updates.

Storage Resource Manager V4.0B supports StorageWorks NAS devices. A White Paper has been written regarding the features and benefits of using SRM with HP StorageWorks NAS.

Abstract The HP StorageWorks NAS Solution Family uses industry-standard technology to bring new levels of capacity and high availability to Network Attached Storage (NAS). HP is proud to announce availability of Insight Manager 7 Service Pack 1.1. This release delivers enhanced capabilities for managing industry standard HP servers (Netservers) as well as the ability to render visual representations of ProLiant BL20p servers and their position within blade server enclosures, and racks.

You can get Insight Manager 7 SP1.1 in one of two ways:

In particular, HP has worked with Red Hat on their Linux Advanced Server technology to support HP Itanium 2-based systems ahead of their previously announced schedule. HP also worked with MSC.Software to ensure that MSC. Linux was available for high performance computing customers at launch.

Q. Which Linux distributions run on HP's Itanium 2-based systems?A. Customers have several options

· Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation will be available in early fall of 2002 to run on zx2000 and zx6000 workstations. The tentative availability date is September 16th. Red Hat will be available preloaded on these systems.

· Red Hat Linux Advanced Server will be available in early fall of 2002 to run on rx2600 and rx5670 servers. The tentative availability date is October 14th. Red Hat will be available preloaded on these systems.

· MSC.Linux, a distribution that is focused on high-performance computing and includes a set of tools to manage compute clusters, is available.

· SuSe Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8.0 will be available by mid-November 2002. SLES 8.0 is targeted to be the first product released that is based on the UnitedLinux distribution.

· Debian is available within the open source community for advanced users. (See www.debian.org/ports/ia64)

· UnitedLinux will be tested on HP Itanium 2 – based systems when it is available. As mentioned above, SLES 8.0 will likely be the first available UnitedLinux-based distribution. UnitedLinux is a group of Linux

distribution companies that have committed to using a common based Linux distribution. These distributions include SuSe, Caldera, TurboLinux, and Conectiva.

· HP is actively working to make the leading Linux distributions available on Itanium 2 – based systems. Please check back later for updates.

Q. Why doesn’t Red Hat 7.2 run on HP’s Itanium 2 – based systems?A. The enhancements required to enable HP’s zx1 chipset are not supported in

7.2. Advanced Server has a newer kernel and HP and Red Hat chose to offer the Advanced Server that is designed for enterprise applications consistent with the target markets for Itanium 2.

Q. What is the HP Enablement Kit for Linux?A. Each and every Itanium 2 – based system configured to run Linux as the

operating system is pre-bundled with an "hp enablement kit for Linux" product. This takes the form of a media kit which is dropped in the box. This media kit includes a CD and manual which provide the framework and documentation for installing, configuring and recovering Linux on the supported Itanium 2 – based system.

Q. What about UnitedLinux for Itanium 2? A. HP will be certifying against UnitedLinux later this year. HP will support

SuSE that will be based on UnitedLinux and so we will support the UnitedLinux base operating system on Itanium 2 – based systems. The distribution companies that are committed to UnitedLinux include SuSE, Caldera, TurboLinux and Conectiva.

Q. What is HP doing with Debian for Itanium 2 systems?A Our Itanium 2 enhancements have been accepted into the Debian project

and are freely available at www.debian.org/ports/ia64.

Q. Does HP offer Linux compute clusters running on Itanium 2-based systems?

A. HP, along with its key partners, offers a Linux compute cluster solution for Itanium 2-based compute nodes. For a densely packed solution, an HP Server rx2600 2-way system is an ideal compute node for performance in a small form factor. For compute clusters requiring maximum performance without concern for space, the HP Server rx5670 4-way system is the best suggestion. Finally, HP Workstation zx2000 and HP Workstation zx6000 can be used for design and visualization tasks one moment and later be repurposed as a compute cluster.

Q. Does HP provide services and support for Linux on Itanium 2 – based systems?

A. Yes, HP provides a robust selection of Linux services and support for Itanium 2 to meet all your planning, application porting and migration, implementation, education and support needs. The full range of services helps you make a smooth transition to the Itanium architecture while allowing you to focus on your core business.

Q. Will my existing Linux Itanium application run on Itanium 2 without recompilation?

A. Yes. Applications compiled for Itanium Linux should be forward compatible to Itanium 2, much like IA-32 Linux applications are generally forward

compatible to new revisions of the Pentium chip. It is possible that broader changes in a Linux distribution could change between their Itanium and Itanium 2 release that could impact an application. However, that type of distribution change would be driven by issues other than a move to Itanium 2.

Q. Will my existing Linux IA-32 application run on Itanium 2, without recompilation?

A. There is support in the Linux distributions for running unmodified IA-32 applications, taking advantage of the IA-32 emulation mode in the Itanium and Itanium 2 processors. While you get effective performance in IA-32 compatibility mode, you won’t achieve the full power of Itanium without running your applications in 64-bit native mode. This is not an important consideration for non-performance critical applications, but we recommend that you port your other applications from compatibility mode to native mode at some point to take advantage of Itanium’s leading-edge capabilities. This will require recompiling, and may require some recoding to be 64-bit clean.

Q. Will my existing Linux application easily recompile for Itanium 2?A. Generally, yes. Linux on Itanium 2 is "just Linux", with the same APIs as you

would find on other platforms. If a Linux application is being ported to Itanium for the first time, there are some potential areas that could be an issue. For example, Linux on Itanium supports 64-bit applications only. In order to successfully port to Itanium, an application would need to be 64-bit clean.

The hp/Atalla AXL600L SSL Accelerator Card is a 33-MHz, 32-bit device that incorporates a dual voltage signal bus and meets or exceeds PCI 2.2 specifications. The AXL600L overcomes the performance bottleneck customers see in SSL-secured Linux application servers. It adds a dedicated coprocessor to a ProLiant or HP server, offloading cycle-

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is ubiquitous throughout the Internet

SSL is the de facto industry standard cryptographic protocol for the Internet today. SSL does not require a complex architecture to be in place before use. SSL is deployed in virtually every browser and in millions of web servers around the world.SSL has been deployed in many different application areas within the Internet. According to the Gartner Group, SSL has been implemented in over 1200 Internet solutions thus far. Security is simply a tool for risk management and SSL provides perfectly adequate security for most applications.

The SSL Performance Bottleneck:

Within the SSL protocol, it is mandatory that the server authenticate itself to the browser which requires the server to compute a single RSA operation—a private key decryption—to establish a secure session. RSA private key operations are a very compute intensive operation, requiring nearly one-tenth of a second on the fastest Pentium processor. This single operation may account for over 95% of a server’s SSL processing. The most common domestic key length for SSL authentication is 1024 bits. Why does a 1024-bit RSA private key operation require millions of CPU instructions to perform? Because the basic math behind RSA is modular exponentiation of a set of 1024-bit long integers. Breaking down x^y mod z (where x, y, and z are over a thousand bits in length each) into small

enough steps for a 32-bit processor is not efficient. Many web servers initially only service requests for web pages and then only later offer some product for sale. Then security is added, often in the form of SSL, and the web server previously servicing hundreds of customers is now ‘broken’ and is only capable of a handful of secure requests. When SSL security is added to web applications, server performance can degrade by two orders of magnitude. The chart above comes from a competitor’s (iPivot) web site and was created by Bill Mallen using numbers supplied by NetworkShop.

The Business Consequence of the SSL Performance Bottleneck

A compelling study from Anderson Consulting shows that over one quarter of the customers shopping during the 1999 holiday season walked away from their purchase while waiting in queue to be serviced by SSL servers. Intel commissioned a study by Giga that concluded that an average customer will wait only eight seconds before surfing away to another site. A third survey that’s done on a regular basis, the Keynote Consumer 40 Index, paints a dire picture. The top 40 e-commerce sites have an average wait of over 16 seconds and growing. Affected businesses need some relief from the SSL performance bottleneck in order to continue to satisfy their customers’ needs. A successful application may have new customers waiting to connect to the server. Customers may become frustrated and go elsewhere. Eventually a business will hit the SSL server performance bottleneck. Users are accustomed to security not costing anything because SSL on their browser is ‘free’. The perception is that SSL security should come free on the server as well. So it is difficult to accept that it will likely pay several thousands of dollars for another processor and even more for additional memory to be able to satisfy waiting SSL connection requests. The SSL performance bottleneck can be solved by offloading compute-intensive cryptographic processing to a specialized coprocessor such as the hp/Atalla AXL600L SSL Accelerator Card.

Just as a floating point co-processor is much more efficient at it’s specific calculation than a general purpose CPU, a cryptographic coprocessor is designed to outperform even the fastest processor at a fraction of the cost. Tomorrow’s web servers will use dedicated cryptographic coprocessors. The natural evolution to specialized hardware seen with floating point (and I/O, audio-video and graphics) co-processors will continue by servicing network security with cryptographic coprocessors. Today this problem is solved by adding a math co-processor for cryptography processing. HP offers the hp/Atalla AXL600L SSL Accelerator Card to alleviate the SSL server performance bottleneck problem. The chart on the right compares the 600 SSL connections per second that the AXL600L can do versus the few SSL connects done by the typical IA-32 server. The chart on the left compares a server with its CPU utilization devoted to cryptographic processing and a server with the hp/Atalla AXL600L coprocessor. Over 600 SSL connections per second is impressive, but remember that at only a handful of SSL requests/second, the application server is spending too much time on cryptography and not enough doing the customer’s business. Offloading the modular exponentiation to the hp/Atalla AXL600L Accelerator frees the application server to do real business work.
