DNA is a biological code that can be engineered. Researchers at ETH Zurich used DNA sequencing not to create organic matter but to encode and store the Swiss Federal Charter and Archimedes’ Methods (83Ko). research institutes coordinated by EPFL in Lausanne, aims to digitally reproduce the functioning of a brain. A milestone was reached in October 2015 with the simulation of a neocortex (37 million synapses, 30,000 neurons). The project aims to improve our understanding of how memory works and the role of sleep or even create an artificial brain similar to our own.

Two biohackers, the founder of Indie.bio, opposed to the high price of insulin and big pharma’s monopoly, want to brew their own insulin at home like beer. Their crowdfunded, open source project consists of growing insulin by inserting the relevant DNA in bacteria, taking advantage of falling prices for biotech equipment and the power of networks.

To protest against the poor state of Panama City’s roads, a TV news show, together with ad agency P4 Ogilvy, created the tweeting pothole.Using sensors marked with a # and placed in holes in the road, El Hueco Twitero posts a tweet to the roads minister whenever a car drives over it. Informatics has developed an artificial intelligence system that is capable of taking the national university entrance exam. After falling short in 2013 and 2014, the program passed in 2015 with a score of 53.8 over 5 subjects, higher than the national average. The goal now is to improve its performance, particularly in physics,and earn a place at the University of Tokyo.

Researchers at the University of Oslo are developing robots that can assess their own performance in tasks. Their appraisal leads to new 3D-printed parts, further tests anditerative improvements in performance.
