INTRODUCTION

•A motherboard serves a critical purpose in a computer. It is the workhorse behind the computer's processes, helping to link everything together and run

the computer.

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF A MOTHERBOARD•A motherboard houses all the main elements of the computer. The first element that comes to mind is the CPU, which is an integral component in determining the speed of a computer. The CPU uses the chipset of the motherboard to communicate with other devices.

CHIPSET•A chipset is a group of integrated circuits (microchips) that can be used together to serve a single function and are therefore manufactured and sold as a unit.

the processor is the main “brain” or

“heart” of a computer

system. It performs all of the instructions and calculations that are needed and

manages the flow of information

through a computer.

Northbridge ChipsetAlternatively referred to as

the PAC (PCI/AGP Controller) and nb, the northbridge is an integrated circuit responsible for communications between the CPU interface, AGP, and the memory. Unlike the Southbridge the Northbridge is directly connected to these components and acts like a "bridge" for the Southbridge chip to communicate with the CPU, RAM, and graphics controller. Today, the northbridge is a single-chip that is North of the PCI bus, however, early computers may have had up to three separate chips that made up the northbridge

ACCELERATED GRAPHICS PORT (AGP)

- is a high-speed point-to-point channel for attaching a video card to a computer system, primarily to assist in the acceleration of 3D computer graphics.

Southbridge Chipset- is a chipset that handles and manage

the opposite part of the Northbridge Chipset which includes the AGP, expansion slots, other devices and chips.

System Panel Connectors- the fpanel or front panel connector,

the system panel connector or system panel header controls a computer power button, reset button, and LED's. The System panel cables, as shown in the pictureare two wire cables that are colorcoded to help identify where theyconnect to the motherboard systempanel connector. The black or whitewire is the ground (GND) wire and the colored wire is the powered wire. The cables, colors, and connections vary depending on the computer case and motherboard you have.
