Microsoft makes big plans for Cortana

Microsoft has finally launched their long awaited virtual personal assistant, Cortana, in USA, UK and china. They are ready to explore this new achievement. Microsoft has been planning to scale this personal assistant in various other devices, platforms across the world and not just in the windows phone. They are also making plans to monetize it but not now.

The company wants to let Cortana achieve trust levels with the users, adjust with the systems and remove all the minor glitches, which might come in future before adding a price tag to it. The company first wants to enhance its platforms and usage among the users before taking it to the next level.

Windows phone group program manager, Marcus Ash and Group program manager, Rob Chambers shared a couple of videos and demos of Cortana with a couple of popular digital world bloggers to spread word about it. Cortana is currently available only in windows phone 8.1 as developers preview which can be used in any part of the world by the users. However they will have to put it on US settings. Referred to as she, Cortana is quite popular in china among windows phone users.

Ash mentioned that Microsoft wants it to be pervasive hence it can be used anywhere by anyone regardless of the country or geographic level on various platforms. He said,

“We want to scale Cortana internationally and across devices. The Android/iOS question is interesting. We’re asking, would Cortana be as effective if she didn’t have access to the details on your phone? We’re still trying to get Cortana adopted on Windows Phone and figure out what it wants to become there. But we’re actively talking about this.”

They also hinted that, Cortana might also be brought to vehicles, desktops and other such venues as a personal assistant in technology. Talking about the idea of integrating ads to the interface of Cortana, ash said,

“We think we’re in the stage right now where we have to build trust with the users. We’ll explore monetization eventually, but Cortana is so nascent. It’s too early. We know there are commercial opportunities, but in this first year we need to establish what Cortana is and how people use it.”
