WHAT IS MATTER?

Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space

Page 3: Matter part 2 types 2013

Mass - the quantity of matter contained in an object

Page 4: Matter part 2 types 2013

Weight - measures force due to gravity

What is the difference between chemical and physical - changes and properties?

Page 9: Matter part 2 types 2013

Physical Property - a characteristic of a material which is observed without a new substance produced

Page 10: Matter part 2 types 2013

Examples - odor, color, volume, state (solid, liquid or gas)

melting or boiling point

Page 11: Matter part 2 types 2013

Physical Change - a change where no new substance is formed

Page 12: Matter part 2 types 2013

Examples - dissolving, tearing, hammering, phase changes or changes of state:

(solid ↔ liquid ↔ gas)

Page 13: Matter part 2 types 2013

Chemistry - the study of matter and its changes

Page 14: Matter part 2 types 2013

Chemical Property - a characteristic of a material which indicates its ability to form a new substance or not

Page 15: Matter part 2 types 2013

Examples - flammability, corrosion of metals, reacting with oxygen

Page 16: Matter part 2 types 2013

Chemical Change - a change that results in the production of a new substance, also called a reaction

Page 17: Matter part 2 types 2013

Examples - Burning, corrosion, baking a cake

CaO + CO2 → CaCO3

Reactants → Products

Four General Signs of a Chemical Change

1. Gas formed2. Large energy change3. Precipitate formed4. Color change (change of odor & taste)
