Population-based biobanks in BBMRI
The mission of WP2 of BBMRI is to provide a strategy for the population-based biobanks to solve the: – legal challenges– Governance challenges– financial challenges
of the utilization of the vast amount of information collected in large epidemiological sample collections and population cohorts brings forth
• European investigators and national health care systems have for decades collected population-based cohorts and health data
• This common treasure is built on the European tax-payer’s money and voluntary participation
• Globally, Europe is still a fore-runner in combining health care information with genomic data
Population-based biobanks in BBMRI
• Harmonizing data across BBMRI biobanks
• Using the structure and data collection strategy identical with those of P3G to facilitate global data comparisons
• 4 epidemiological biobanks have provided detailed information of their content

– obesity as the model – obesity as the model phenotype”phenotype”
FP7, Grant Agreement Nr. 212111
• Can the etiologic background of obesity be approached by using samples/data from several biobanks with different settings?– Obesity was chosen as it is an enormously important
public health problem and as it can well demonstrate several problems:
• Challenges in consensus definition/criteria for the phenotype
• Quantity and quality of life style data collected
• Extent and reliability of family history
• Diversity /quality criteria of the laboratory data
• Age of the population studied and the follow up time
• DNA SAMPLES, Tubes, Storage plates (96 format), Storage format, 2D coded storage plates (96 format), Dry storage (FTA/ GenVault), Other, Barcodes, Sample, 2D codes, tracing, Printed labels, Hand written labels, Automated storage & retrieval of samples, Manual retrieval of samples, Sample storage facilities/ sample retrieval, Access control monitored, Temperature monitoring (automated alarm in case of thawing), Response time to alarm, Commercial, LIMS, Modified commercial, Developed in-house, No LIMS available, Sample logistics (recieval, distribution, locations), DNA extraction, LIMS processes covered, Sample aliquoting, Sample freeze thaw cycles, Inventory, Sample quality, Sample quantity, Sample receival, DNA extraction, Sample aliquoting, SOPs for laboratory staff, Sample quantity check, Sample quality check, Sample inventory, Sample shipment, Sample return, Sample MTA, Sample delivery policies, Samples returned back to biobank after analysis, Quality checked after samples returned back to the biobank, Quality checked after samples returned back to the biobank
Review of technical solutions Review of technical solutions and quality criteriaand quality criteria
• BBMRI presents a review of technical solutions and quality criteria for storage, retrieval and transfer of DNA samples in 5 different networking biobanks – Estonia, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Norway– The review is based on the previous studies by the P3G
observatory as well as the procedures currently employed in the
BBMRI´s pilot networking biobanks.
