Lead Shielding

• Lead shielding refers to the use of lead to shield or protect people or object from any radiation.

• Because of its high density and high atomic number, lead can effectively fade certain kinds of radiation.

• And that’s why lead is used as radiation protection in applications ranging from x-ray imaging and PET rooms to nuclear reactors.

Why Lead for Shielding?...

• Lead has extremely low level of neutron absorption and hence practically no gamma radiation; because of which it cannot become radioactive. Even after long exposure of neutrons, lead emits only insignificant amount of radiation due to activation.

• Lead is not the densest, but it is readily available, easily fabricated and lowest cost of highest density materials.

• Lead is more uniform throughout as compared to other materials.

Why Lead for Shielding?

• Lead is less likely to become contaminated with dirt, which in turn, may become radioactive.

• Other properties of lead are its high density, high atomic number and high level of stability.

Lead Shielding Uses…

• Lead is primarily used as radiation shield for x-rays produced at potentials below 300 KV.

• Shielding of containers for radioactive materials.• For shielding in x-ray machines, nuclear power plants, labs,

military equipment, and other places where radiation may be encountered.

Sheet Lead Uses

• Personal shielding includes lead aprons (such as the familiar garment used during dental x-rays), thyroid shields, and lead gloves.
