8.2 2. Benjamin Banneker- Facts
Benjamin Banneker is a famous African American
mathematician,amateur astronomer. 3. He advanced the pocket watch
into a clock. 4. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland,
November 9 th , 1731. 5. His father was a slave who bought his
freedom of Mary Benneky, an Englishwoman's daughter. He had three
younger sisters.
Banneker grew up on his father's farm with his three sisters.
6. Benjamin was schooled by his grandmother. He loved math. 7.
Joseph Ellicott was an amateur mathematician and astronomer and
gave Banneker books on astronomy and mathematics as well as
instruments for observing the stars. This started his interest in
astronmy.

One day Benjamin's family introduced him to their Quaker
neighbor. He owned a pocket watch, that encouraged him to make a
large model of it. 9. Benjamin took the watch apart and analyzed
each part. 10. The Big Ben clock lasted for over 50 years. 11. His
studies determined a solar and lunar eclipse
His almanac and journals, made a big part of history. They were
compared to the famous Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac.

In 1980, the U.S. Postal Service issued a postage stamp in his
honor. 13. Benjamin was self-taught science and loved math in
school. 14. Benjamin never married. 15. He died Oct. 9, 1806 16. He
died while he was asleep.
