Objectives

At the end of this chapter you should:

• know some of the adverse effects thatextremes and fluctuations in relative humidityand temperature have on objects;

• understand the relationship between relativehumidity and temperature; and

• be able to take steps to limit damage tocollections caused by fluctuations in relativehumidity and temperature.

Introduction

Relative humidity and temperature are essentialcomponents of a comfortable working environment.However, there can be some conflict between theneeds of people and the requirements for the careof collections.

Relative humidity—RH—is the amount of watervapour contained in the air at a particulartemperature compared with the total amount ofwater vapour the air can contain at thattemperature. Relative humidity is expressed as apercentage. Various materials respond differentlyover a range of humidity levels and there is anoptimum level of RH suitable for the display andstorage of mixed materials.

Extremes of relative humidity and temperature canadversely affect the condition of objects,particularly those made of organic materials. But itis important to remember that many materials willstabilise in a particular climate, even thoughconditions are extreme. Once stabilised andconditioned to the climate, these materials willnot necessarily be adversely affected by theconstant, extreme conditions.

If the climate changes or objects are moved to adifferent climate, problems can arise. Changes inrelative humidity and temperature—particularlyrapid changes—are potentially far more damagingto most materials than are constant extremes.These changes can occur easily with suddenchanges in the local weather, when air-conditioning units break down, and when objectsare moved from storage boxes to open display orfrom one region of the country to another.

Steps can be taken to minimise fluctuations inrelative humidity and temperature, and to protectvaluable collections from the adverse effects ofextremes of relative humidity and temperature. Todo this, it is useful to understand how relativehumidity and temperature are related, what causesrelative humidity to fluctuate, and to know whateffects they have on different types of materials.

What is relative humidity?

Heat really needs no explanation. You may havedifficulty defining it, but you’re certainly familiarwith the experience of it. Relative humidity, onthe other hand, does need explanation.

Water is an extremely pervasive substance and canbe found everywhere on the planet—including inthe air, where it’s held as vapour.

The capacity of air to hold water-vapour variesaccording to the temperature of the air.

The warmer the air, the more water-vapour it canhold. As the air cools down, its capacity to holdwater will decrease.

Relative humidity is a measure of the amount ofthe amount of water-vapour contained in air at aparticular temperature. It is basically a comparisonbetween:

• the amount of water-vapour held in the air atany one time and at a particular temperature;and

• the total amount of water-vapour which theair can hold at the same temperature, that is,the amount of water which will saturate theair at that temperature.

Relative humidity is expressed as a percentage. This can be written as an equation:

RH = water-vapour present in the air x 100%

water-vapour required to saturate air at that temperature

As the temperature of air increases, its capacity tocontain water-vapour increases. For example:

• At 0ºC the air can hold about 6 grams of waterfor each cubic metre of air, that is, 6g/m3.

• At 10ºC this increases to 10g/m3

• At 20ºC it increases to 17g/m3

• And at 30ºC it increases to 30g/m3

So, if air at 20ºC contains 8.5g/m3 of water-vapour:

RH = 8.5 x100%

= 50%

Thus the relative humidity would by 50%.

How does relative humidity change?

Relative humidity is a measure of the amount ofwater-vapour contained in air at a particulartemperature. The capacity of air to hold water-vapour varies according to the air temperature.

However, although raising the temperature increasesthe capacity of air to hold water, there is not alwayswater available to move into the air to fill thatincreased capacity. So changes in temperature oftenlead to quite significant alterations to the relativehumidity.

For example, in an empty, sealed box containing afixed amount of water-vapour, raising thetemperature will lower the relative humidity. Thisis because the capacity of the air to contain waterhas increased but the actual amount of water hasremained the same. Using our previous example ofair at 20ºC with 8.5g/m3 of water-vapour, if thetemperature is raised to 30ºC and no additionalwater is available:

at 20ºC RH = 8.5 x 100% BUT at 30ºC RH = 8.5 x 100%17 30

= 50% = 28.3%

The reverse is also true. If the temperature in asealed box continuing a fixed amount of water-vapour is lowered, the relative humidity willincrease. The capacity of the air to hold water hasdecreased but the amount of water has remainedthe same.

This is an important concept, because displaycases and sealed storage areas in some waysbehave like sealed boxes; and the relative humiditycan vary because the temperature varies.

This principle can also be applied to some extentto museums, galleries and libraries. But they aregenerally far more complex.

They have doors which admit moisture-containingair from the outside, where the temperature andrelative humidity is usually different from theinside conditions.

People come into these areas. They raise thetemperature, especially when they are in largegroups; and they take in and give out moisture asthey breathe.

Museums, galleries and libraries contain objectswhich take up water and give out water, accordingto the temperature of the surrounding air.

There may also be heating and cooling devicesand/or air-conditioning in the building.

Why worry about relative humidity

and temperature?

Relative humidity and temperature are two of theenvironmental factors which can contribute to thedeterioration of our valued collections.

Extremes of temperature and relative humidity—and rapid fluctuations in these—can lead to arange of problems. The risks of physical damage,such as warping, cracking and splitting, chemicaldeterioration, and insect or mould attack are allincreased when temperature and relative humidityare too high or too low.

The effects of extremes and fluctuations in temperature

Extremes and fluctuations in temperature arepotentially less harmful than extremes orfluctuations in relative humidity; but it is difficult toseparate the two because they are closelyinterrelated. Some independent effects of hightemperature include:

• increased biological activity. Most insects andmoulds thrive and reproduce readily in warmerconditions; and

• acceleration of chemical deteriorationprocesses. Temperature affects the rate atwhich chemical reactions take place. Forexample, a temperature rise from 20–30ºC maydouble the rate of some degradation reactions.And this worsens if light, water or pollutionalso contribute to these chemical reactions.

Fluctuations in temperature cause:

• expansion and contraction. If this is unevenand/or rapid, it can cause physical damageand distortion. This can be hazardous forobjects made of composite materials; and

• some types of plastic, for example, vinylrecords, shrink and warp in high temperatures.

The most important effect of temperature is theeffect it has on altering relative humidity levels.

The effects of extremes and fluctuations in relative humidity

In high relative humidity conditions insects andmoulds thrive and reproduce readily, metalscorrode, dyes and textiles fade and deterioratemore quickly, organic materials such as wood andleather swell or change shape, and gelatineemulsions and adhesives become sticky.

Organic materials absorb water. This is particularlynoticeable in thinner materials, such as paper,vellum and parchment, textiles, leather and barkpaintings. As materials absorb water, they swelland change shape, for example, stretched vellumsand mounted textiles sag.

The effects of humidity on organic materials arenot always immediately noticeable. But after awhile, extensive damage eventually occurs.

For example, a large block of wood may take weeksor even months to transfer water from its surfaceinto its bulk, leading to different parts of thewood having different water-contents. Theconsequence this has on the wood is to make itswell by different amounts, which will have theeffect of splitting and warping the material.

Wood also swells more across the grain than alongthe grain; and by an amount which variesaccording to the type of wood. This makes lifecomplicated when caring for furniture.

Textiles can display what seems to be the oppositeresponse to changes in relative humidity. A multi-strand thread shortens in length when the relativehumidity goes up. This is because the individualthreads expand in diameter more than they expandin length. The result is that the strands wraparound each other more tightly, which causes theoverall length to decrease. Often this process doesnot reverse when the relative humidity drops again.

A canvas responds in the same way as textiles;however, the paint layer on the canvas does not

contract. Rather, it will compress, leading to crackingor separation between canvas and paint layer.

Different components of single objects absorbmoisture at different rates and swell by differentamounts. This can cause problems, such as paintlayers splitting and separating from timber panels.

Composites of metal and wood are affected also.As the metal corrodes, the wood starts to split inorder to accommodate the corrosion products.

Adhesives that absorb water become sticky and arean attractive food source for moulds and insects.

Gelatine emulsions on photographs also swell inhumid conditions and can readily stick to the glassin their frames or, if they are stacked, they canstick together.

As for papers which are stuck down at the edges,they will increase in size in humid conditions andthus expand in the middle as their edges arerestricted. This can lead to creasing.

In very low relative humidity conditions, such asin arid areas:

• insects can still survive;

• organic materials give out the moisture theycontain. This can cause materials to dry outand become brittle or to distort and split;

• thicker materials lose moisture much morerapidly from their surface. This can causewarping;

• different components of single objects releasemoisture at different rates, which can causethe bonds between them to loosen; and

• adhesives dry out and crack, and can fail as a result.

If fluctuations are occurring constantly, thematerials are being subjected to constant movementwhich is usually not uniform and often results incracking, splitting and warping. Some examples ofextreme damage caused by fluctuations are:

• bark paintings expand and contract as theyabsorb water and release it. This leads to thebark warping and splitting, and they can losepaint;

• bone and ivory are very susceptible todamage caused by fluctuations; and they warp

and split. This is especially a problem for verythin ivory sheets, such as those used forminiature painting;

• furniture with veneers can be damagedseverely, because the thin, veneer layer islikely to curl and pop off the surface of thefurniture if it repeatedly expands andcontracts; and

• fluctuations in relative humidity can also alterthe chemical composition of some minerals,so that they become another mineral.

What happens in extreme, but stable environments?

When conditions are extreme but constant, damagecan still occur. Experience shows, however, thatmany materials become conditioned to an extremeenvironment.

An object in constantly high or low relativehumidity does not absorb and lose waterrepeatedly; and it is not subject to the enormousstresses of the cycles which affect objects influctuating environments. Such an object is likelyto be preserved longer and in better conditionthan a similar object in a fluctuating environment.

Remember, the emphasis should be on stability.

Can the damage be prevented?

Damage to objects and collections cannot alwaysbe prevented totally; but it can certainly belimited and slowed by controlling the relativehumidity and temperature.

The most significant effect temperature can havein a museum, gallery or library environment is theway it can alter relative humidity levels.

Relative humidity and temperature are closelylinked; and it is helpful to understand this linkwhen setting out to control the environment wherecollections and items of value are stored.

Remember that for a fixed quantity of moisture ina given air space, as temperature rises, the relativehumidity drops and, as the temperature drops, therelative humidity rises.

Identifying the source of the problem

Extremes and fluctuations in relative humidity andtemperature which damage collections areexperienced in many museums, galleries andlibraries. These changes can be caused by:

• the regional climate;

• the climate within buildings;

• localised climates with buildings;

• microclimates; and

• visitors.

Australia is a large country with three verydifferent climates—tropical, arid and temperate.Regional climates are particularly significant forobjects which are displayed outside.

Because buildings are not fully sealed, outsideconditions have a significant influence on theclimate inside the building. The building’s style,the materials used, the state of repair of thebuilding and whether the building is insulated, air-conditioned or without either, all influence theimpact outside conditions have on the climateinside the building.

Although buildings are not fully sealed from theoutside weather, they act as barriers to the freeflow of heat and moisture. This is why air-conditioning and heating are effective in providinga comfortable climate.

Within buildings there are localised climates andmicroclimates where conditions vary greatly fromconditions in other parts of the building. Forexample, there would be greater variations intemperature and humidity in a small tea room witha toaster and a kettle than there would be in aclosed-off storage area.

Cupboards, display cases, boxes and frames act asbarriers to air and moisture circulation and candevelop their own microclimate. The materials usedto make the display cases, boxes and frames,combined with what’s stored in them, alsoinfluence the microclimate.

People are important to the museums, galleriesand libraries. The effect they have on the localclimate depends on:

• how many visitors there are and whether theyarrive individually or in groups;

• whether they have wet or damp umbrellas andcoats;

• how long they stay; and

• their ages—school groups are potentiallymore disruptive to a controlled environmentthan adult tour groups or individuals.

All of these factors can contribute to fluctuationsin, and problems with, relative humidity. Carefulmanipulation of these factors helps create a stable environment where the risk of damage is minimised.

What can be done to minimise damage?

The potential for damage to collections from theeffects of relative humidity and heat is greatestwhen relative humidity and temperature fluctuaterapidly, or are extremely low or extremely high.

The damage can be minimised by modifying theconditions, if possible, and creating buffer zonesbetween your objects and the extreme orfluctuating conditions.

There are many ways of controlling temperatureand relative humidity. Some methods are betterthan others and their advantages anddisadvantages will be discussed.

The measures you use to improve your building’senvironment should be selected so that you canmonitor their effects and, if necessary, modify them.

Modifying the conditions in buildings

Airconditioning

Airconditioning is the most obvious, but notnecessarily the best, method of controllingtemperature and relative humidity. The methodinvolves taking air—either fresh air from theoutside or recycled air from the inside—andchanging its temperature and moisture content.

There are two basic types of coolingairconditioners available.

An evaporative airconditioner works by passing airover a moist surface and increasing the moisturecontent of the air, raising the relative humidity.This type of airconditioner should not be usedunless there is a dehumidifier to remove themoisture from the cool air.

Cooling coil airconditioners work on therefrigerator principle of keeping the air cool anddry. This type of airconditioner should be usedwith caution, and preferably with a humidifier toadd moisture to the air. Monitoring theeffectiveness of such equipment is crucial.

If you have airconditioning or you are consideringinstalling it, you should be aware of the followingimportant points:

• the cost of purchasing, operating andmaintaining an airconditioning plant is high.If such a financial commitment is possible,seriously consider getting a system which notonly regulates temperature but is capable ofcontrolling the relative humidity as well;

• if airconditioning is used to control theenvironment, it should operate continuously.For example, it is tempting to turn off theairconditioner because of the high operatingcosts. But the cyclic process of turning it onand off is likely to be more damaging tocollections than no air-conditioning at all;

• airconditioning systems have a limited life.They will operate at greatest efficiency for 10to 15 years; and

• airconditioning systems should be wellmaintained, otherwise you could experiencefluctuations in the environment.

Heating

It is sometimes necessary to heat whole buildingsor individual rooms. Generally, heating is used tomake people comfortable. This is an importantconsideration; but you should be aware also thatraising the temperature affects the objects in thebuilding.

Heating affects relative humidity. Remember:

• heating a building in an already dryenvironment could be disastrous, because itwill lower the relative humidity;

• heating a building when there is anadditional source of water will evaporate more of the water. The relative humidity mayremain unchanged or it may alter, dependingon the amount of water available and theamount of heat applied. This may not be theeffect you’re hoping to achieve; and

• if you want to raise the temperature withoutlowering the relative humidity, you needadditional water. Additional water sourcescould include mechanical devices such ashumidifiers or, more simply, dishes or traysof water left to evaporate.

Altering the relative humidity

It is possible to vary the humidity withoutmarkedly changing the temperature. Relativehumidity can be reduced using a dehumidifier. This is a remedial measure which adjusts adangerously wet environment.

Moisture can be introduced to the air using eithera steam generator or an ultrasonic humidifier.These are remedial measures which adjust adangerously dry environment.

These machines should not be seen as permanentsolutions to your environmental problems. Theycan be costly to run, they need fairly constantattention and can be bulky and noisy.

The building as a buffer zone

Don’t despair if your building is not air-conditionedand you can’t afford airconditioning. A well-maintained building of solid construction provides avery reasonable environment for collections.

A building made of thick stone walls or cavity-brick construction with high ceilings provides goodinsulation against climatic changes. In hotweather, these buildings take a few days to heatup; and then, as the outside temperature drops,they lose heat slowly. Fluctuations occur, but theyoccur gradually.

Make sure your building is well-maintained, so thatit provides the maximum possible seal againstfluctuations in the outside environment. This isparticularly important if the building is made oflight building materials and is in a fairly extremeenvironment.

Clean out gutters, repair cracks in walls andceilings, and have leaky roofs checked. Thisimproves the stability of the temperature andhumidity inside.

If you are considering upgrading the buildings,remember to insulate walls and ceilings—especially if the building is constructed fromlight-weight or heat-conductive materials such as fibro and corrugated iron. By so doing, it cannot only help to modify the internal environment,but also ensure better preservation of thecollection as well as making people feel morecomfortable inside.

Use the features of the building

Improved conditions for the storage and display of collections can be achieved by choosing goodstorage and display sites within the building, and using the features of the building to modifyconditions.

The most stable area of a non-airconditionedbuilding is an internal room on the ground floor—because it is buffered against climatic changes.

There are other areas one could choose. Basementsare acceptable as they provide a cool temperature.However, they are likely to be damp. On the otherhand, an attic would often not be insulated, butwould be dry.

If there is an optimum choice, the most sensitiveobjects should be displayed in an internal room, orat least against an internal wall in preference toan external one.

In warm, humid conditions, such as in tropical areas:

• air flow and good ventilation are important ifyou want to minimise damage to collections;

• use oscillating fans, with doors open toimprove air movement; and

• consider other ways of cooling the inside ofthe building. For example, install interiorblinds on windows to limit the amount ofheat coming into the building, install exteriorshutters or awnings, or put up shade-cloth. Ifpossible, plant trees around the building, butnot too close because this gives insects easyaccess to the building.

If you are building a museum or modifying anexisting building in the tropics, remember thatnon-airconditioned buildings should havebreezeways, if possible.

In arid or temperate zones, when the temperatureis extreme outside the building, you can limittemperature fluctuations inside your building by:

• keeping doors and windows closed;

• keeping self-closing doors well oiled, so thatthey shut quickly and fully;

• installing interior blinds on windows, tobuffer against outside conditions;

• installing exterior shutters or awnings, orputting up shade-cloth; and

• planting trees around the building—but nottoo close because this gives insects easyaccess to the building.

Encourage people to leave wet umbrellas and coatsat the front door—by providing umbrella basinsand coat hooks. This will prevent the introductionof excess moisture.

Local climates and microclimates

In the same way that you use the features of abuilding to modify the conditions within thebuilding, you can use doors, windows, blinds and awnings—to modify conditions withinindividual rooms.

There are a number of other steps which can betaken to create and modify microclimates withinthe building.

Layers of storage

When storing important objects, give them theirown microclimate by providing layers of storage asthis provides some protection against climaticextremes and fluctuations, even when conditions inthe room or building are difficult to control.

Microclimates also exists within glazed frames,display cases and boxes.

A display case is a box with transparent sides intowhich an object is placed. The walls of the boxisolate the object to some extent. Passive controlsystems can also be set up within the box.

Silica gel is the most common material used tocontrol relative humidity in display cases. It canbe pre-conditioned to achieve a desired humiditylevel; the quantity placed in the case depends onthe volume of the case.

Silica gel is not particularly easy to use. For more information about its use

refer to the section on the use of silica gel later in this chapter.

Other materials, such as Nikka pellets and Artsorb,operate on the same principles as silica gel.

Cheaper alternatives which can be used includeclean, cotton scraps and shredded, acid-free paper.These absorb excess moisture, but do little tocorrect a dry environment.

Acid-free wrappers, interleaving, mounting andframing when used individually or incombinations, create layers of protection fromextremes of, and fluctuations in, relativehumidity. They create small, isolatedmicroclimates in which the relative humidityfluctuates slowly.

CAUTION

Avoid sealing objects in plastic in tropical conditions—it will not allow them to breathe,

creating a risk of mould growth.

A word of caution about travelling

exhibitions and loans

Remember that your collections may be subject toa changing environment within and outside amuseum. Of particular concern is if items are lentto other organisations, or are transported for otherreasons. They should be well packed and sealed, toensure that they are not subjected to unacceptablefluctuations in transit.

On arrival at the destination of transported items,the local climate within the crate should beallowed to gradually adjust to the conditions ofthe new environment. The crates should remainunopened at the destination for a full 24 hours.This should also be done on the return journey.

If the objects are travelling from one extreme toanother, for example, from a tropical to an aridclimate, it may be advisable to allow more than 24hours for conditioning at each end.

In an ideal world...

The levels of relative humidity—RH—recommendedfor the safe-keeping of collections in museums,galleries and libraries are:

• 50% ± 5%;

• this is a compromise which has been arrivedat by assessing the average requirement of anaverage collection in an average climate;

• it is almost impossible to achieve a constantrelative humidity of 50%; so a margin of 5 percent either side of this has been permitted,that is, between 45% and 55%;

• the danger zones for relative humidity areover 65%, when mould grows and metalcorrosion is common; and below 35%, whensome materials dry out and become brittle;

• in tropical areas, 60% ± 5% is more realistic.

For the safe-keeping of collections in museums,galleries and libraries, the temperature should bekept constant—in the range 18–22ºC.

These recommended levels are ideal. However, insome areas of Australia it is extremely difficult tocome close to achieving these recommended levels.It is not always practical to put all our efforts intoachieving these levels within a building, whenthere are many others ways of providing protection.

CAUTION

We’re not in an ideal world, so it is important to remember that many objects become

conditioned to their environments—even though these may be extreme.

A lot of damage can be done by attempting to place an object, which is stable in

an extreme climate, into an environment that conforms to the recommended levels.

Australia’s climatic zones

ARID

An arid climate is generally very dry.

For example:

In arid areas, it is often very hot during the day and very cold at night. This wide fluctuation ismatched by wide fluctuations in relative humidity. Take Alice Springs for example:

• temperatures have been known to range from 42ºC to 20ºC in summer;

• and in winter from 18ºC to -5ºC; and

• relative humidity can range from 75%–20%.

TROPICAL

Tropical climates occur north of the Tropic of Capricorn. They are characterised by heavy rainfall, high humidity and high temperatures.

For example:

Average readings do not give a very good indication of the extremes that can be experienced. In Darwin,for example:

• temperatures can range from 35ºC to 20ºC in a day;

• relative humidity can range from 100%–50%; and

• high temperature and relative humidity tend to coincide.

Note: Townsville may not be considered tropical—it may be more accurately classified as sub-tropical.It must be remembered that these categories are only a guide. Climates change gradually and there aremany areas in Australia that would be difficult to place in these very broad categories.

TEMPERATE

A temperate climate is considered a moderate climate.

For example:

However extreme and fluctuations can be experienced in temperate areas. Take Adelaide for example:

• temperatures have been known to range from 40ºC to 15ºC in a day;

• relative humidity can range from 100%–30%; and

• when it is hot in Adelaide it is often quite dry.

Temperate climates tend to have a greater range of temperatures than tropical climates and may includeextreme climatic variations.

MORE ABOUT RELATIVEHUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE

Measuring relative humidity

Being able to measure relative humidity is notabsolutely necessary when controlling fluctuationsor extremes; but it is helpful in identifyingproblems.

If the environment is very dry or very damp, youcan generally feel it—your skin responds to theseconditions. We feel dry and sometimes a bit itchyin very dry conditions, and clammy in humidconditions. But feeling the extremes doesn’t tell ushow extreme the conditions are; and it gives us noindication of how rapidly the conditions arefluctuating.

To gather information about the levels, you needto measure the relative humidity and temperature;and to get information about the rate offluctuation, you need to monitor the environment.

Measuring the conditions involves taking readingsat a specific time—a snapshot of the conditions.

Monitoring conditions involves continuous orrepeated measurement, so that you get a changingpicture or series of snapshots over a period of time.

There are a number of devices which can be usedto measure relative humidity.

Whirling hygrometer

A whirling hygrometer—also called a slingpsychrometer—measures relative humidity andtemperature directly.

It has two matched thermometers. One thermometeris called the dry bulb and the other the wet bulb.The wet bulb thermometer has a cotton sleevewrapped around its base. Distilled water from asmall reservoir is used to keep the sleeve wet.

The hygrometer is whirled around in the air. Whilethis happens, water from the sleeve of the wetbulb thermometer evaporates, and the wet-bulbtemperature shown by the thermometer goes down.

The amount of water which evaporates depends onthe capacity of the air to contain water. Thedecrease in temperature shows how much waterhas gone into the air; this shows the capacity ofthe air to contain water.

The dry bulb gives the temperature of the air.

By comparing the two temperatures after theinstrument has been whirled, the relative humiditycan be calculated. This is made easier by usingpublished tables listing the relative humidityagainst the dry and wet-bulb temperatures. Thesetables should be provided with the hygrometer.

The advantages of using a whirling hygrometer are:

• they are relatively cheap;

• they don’t require ongoing maintenance; and

• if you purchase another measuring device,you will still need a whirling hygrometer, as areference device to calibrate the other device.

The disadvantages of using a whirling hygrometerare:

• they provide a snapshot only. They do notcontinuously monitor the environment;

• to monitor the environment with a whirlinghygrometer, you need to take readings in thesame places at regular intervals, and recordwhen and where you took the readings; and

• whirling a manually-operated hygrometer canmake your arm tired. Battery-operatedwhirling hygrometers are available.

Thermohygrograph

A thermohygrograph allows for continuousmeasurement of relative humidity and temperatureover a period of time. It monitors theenvironmental changes.

Thermohygrographs work on the principle thatorganic materials expand and contract as therelative humidity changes. In this case, theorganic material is human hair.

The hairs are bundled together and stretchedbetween a fixed pin and a moveable pin. Themoveable pin is attached to a series of levers,which amplify the movement of the hairs.

A pen is attached to the end lever; and this penplots the movement of the lever on a chart, whichis mounted on a rotating cylinder. The rate ofrotation can be altered, so that the relativehumidity is plotted over a day, a week or a month.

A thermohygrograph also has a temperaturesensor—which records the temperature on thesame chart.

The chart should be changed at the end of eachrecording period. When you change the chart, setthe pen on the correct time, and you will have arecord of the times when changes occur.

The advantages of using a thermohygrograph are:

• the thermohygrograph chart containsinformation about temperature and humidity, aswell as the relationship between the two; and

• the chart also shows when fluctuations occurred,so you can relate fluctuations to events in thearea being monitored, for example, the arrival ofa bus-load of tourists on a wet day!

The disadvantages of using a thermohygrograph are:

• they require ongoing maintenance, to ensurethey are recording accurately and to ensurethat the cylinder is rotating at the right rate;

• they need to be calibrated periodically, andthe hairs need to be re-conditioned; and

• thermohygrographs give you information onlyif you look at the charts. Most people look atthe charts only at the end of the recordingperiod, so they don’t respond immediately toproblems as they arise.

Dial hygrometers

Dial hygrometers work on the same principle as thethermohygrograph—using human hair to operate alever which moves a dial.

The advantages of using a dial hygrometer are thatit is small and can be placed in display cases andon shelves.

The disadvantages of using a dial hygrometer are:

• they measure relative humidity, but not thetemperature; and

• they measure continuously, but don’t recordthe information—you have to look at themcontinuously if you want to use them tomonitor changes.

Electronic hygrometers

Electronic hygrometers are generally used toprovide a snapshot of conditions. They measurerelative humidity and temperature, and need to becalibrated periodically. Before they are used, theyneed to be allowed to acclimatise to the area theywill be monitoring.

Data loggers

Systems which monitor relative humidity andtemperature, and download data to computers arenow available—they are called data loggers.

The advantages of using data loggers are:

• they can be linked to alarms so that whenconditions move outside the recommendedlevels, action can be taken; and

• the remote sensors can be placed in displaycases, storage boxes and crates.

The disadvantages of using data loggers are:

• you need a computer to access theinformation; and

• they are expensive—although they are likelyto become cheaper as time goes by.

Humidity indicator cards

Humidity indicator cards are also available. Theseuse moisture-sensitive salts which change colouras the relative humidity alters. They can be veryuseful for low-cost monitoring—especially withindisplay cases and storage boxes—provided youcheck them regularly.

Separate temperature cards are needed if you wantto check temperature variations.

Calibration

Thermohygrographs and dial and electronichygrometers do not remain accurate. Ideally, theyshould be calibrated against an instrument such as awhirling hygrometer once a month and if they haveslipped out of calibration, they should berecalibrated. The hairs in thermohygrographs anddial hygrometers must also be reconditionedregularly.

We will not give detailed instructions for thecalibration of individual instruments because therewill be slight variations, depending on the type ofinstrument you have—whether a thermohygrographor a dial hygrometer. The instrument will comewith instructions. If it does not, ask the supplierfor clear instructions. If you don’t follow theinstructions, your readings won’t be accurate andcan’t be relied on.

If you buy a thermohygrograph, you will need tobuy a whirling hygrometer as well. If funds arelimited, the whirling hygrometer would be a wiserinvestment.

Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier is basically a cooling coilairconditioner. Instead of conducting thecompressor heat out of the building, the heat isretained inside the building—and so thetemperature does not change, except when thedehumidifier is in a small room. In this case, thetemperature in the room can be raised by theoperation of the dehumidifier.

Moisture from the air, however, is still condensedon the cooling coils, and taken away by a hose orcollected in a bucket. Dehumidifiers are a remedialmeasure to adjust a dangerously wet environment.

If using a dehumidifier to dry an area of yourbuilding, remember to empty the catchmentbucket—the buckets are not very big.

Humidifiers and steam generators

Moisture can be introduced into the air by usingeither a steam generator or an ultrasonichumidifier.

A steam generator uses heat to create steam. The steam is then cooled to form a water-vapour,which can be introduced into the museum.

An ultrasonic humidifier uses a small crystal—vibrating at very high frequency—to smash liquid-water into tiny droplets. The droplets are smallenough to be suspended in air as a cold vapour.

Both devices are remedial measures to adjust adangerously dry environment.

NB. The water in humidifiers and steam generatorsneeds to be topped up regularly. If this is notdone, the steam generator or ultrasonic humidifiercould be severely damaged.

The use of silica gel

Individual display cases can act as buffer zones,and maintain humidity at reasonably constantlevels—provided the temperature does not varygreatly. However, fluctuations can occur and it issometimes necessary to use buffering materials:silica gel, for example.

Silica gel is often seen as a simple solution toenvironmental problems. In some museums andgalleries, small bags of silica gel are placed indisplay cases and left there permanently.Unfortunately, this has almost no effect.

Using silica gel is not simple. The calculation usedto determine the amount of silica gel required iscomplex. It involves a knowledge of the daily rateof air-changes in the case, the local humidityconditions and the volume of the case.

The amount of silica gel required is far more thanmost people imagine. The amount required canrange from approximately 7kg/m3 to about 20kg/m3,depending on conditions. This is a lot of silica gel.

Silica gel also needs to be reconditioned, becauseit absorbs water and retains it. The silica gel hasto be removed from the case and reconditioned—usually by heating in an oven—and then put backin the case. You may need two batches of silicagel, so that when you are reconditioning one, theother is in the case.

Display cases that are to contain silica gel shouldideally have separate compartments: one for theobject and one for the silica gel; and there shouldbe air flow between these compartments.

CAUTION

If you use silica gel in its granulated form, it is advisable to

wear a dust mask.
