• Introduced on 5 September 2001.

• The first country to use an ID card that incorporates

both photo ID and fingerprint biometric data on an

in-built computer chip embedded in a piece of

plastic.

Functions available in MyKad are:

• Identity card, including fingerprints and photo

• Driving license information

• Storage for health information

• e-cash

• ATM integration

• Toll road tolling system and also public transport

payment system

• Digital certificate (PKI)

MALAYSIAN MYKAD

• Launched in September 1997

• Mass transit plus retailers, on-street parking meters, car parks, and other POS applications such as service stations and vending machines.

• Used as access control cards in buildings and for school administrative functions. At certain office buildings, residential buildings, and schools, the card is required for entry

• >25% of transactions were non-transit related.

• > 20 million cards in circulation; 95% of the population of Hong Kong aged 16 to 65

• >11 million daily transactions
