Biography: Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale was born on January 26, 1974. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the middle child of five kids. She went to the University of Utah. She first studied a double major; they were Theater and English. She decided her real passion was English, so she pursued that. She graduated from the MFA in 2000. Her first book was published by Bloomsburry, the UK publisher of Harry Potter. She has four kids; their names are Max, Maggie, Dinah, and Wren.

SummaryThe main character is Miri. She lives on Mount

Eskel. During the beginning, she has to go to an academy away from the mountain. She has to go because in one year, the prince will choose one of the students to be his bride. Miri does not want to go for many reasons; one of them is that she does not want to leave her father and her sister Marda. Despite this, she has to go anyways. There she learns how to read and write. Also, she learns to have proper manners. She stands up for all the students because the teacher is strict and mean. She was elected the Academy Princess. The prince said he liked her the best, but the next day he abruptly left. Does she be selected as his wife or did something go wrong and the prince won’t come back? Is there some kind of twist? Read to find out.

CharactersMain Characters

Miri is very small and petite. She is around fourteen through sixteen throughout the course of the novel. She is very funny and just is brave. She turns out to be smart too.

Supporting CharactersBritta is a girl who had just moved to the mountain. She too had to go to the academy. At first, Britta did not talk to Miri but later she did. They soon became best friends. Britta is shy but funny at the same time. Peder is Miri’s crush. They had good times together and barely ever fought. Peder was always there when Miri needed help. He likes to carve things out of linder.Olana is the person who teaches Miri. She was mean and strict, but only because she wanted everyone to succeed

Rating

This novel was very good. It has wonderful description and intense moments that left you wondering until you read on. It had a slight twist with romance too. The only thing that could have made this book better was that it explained things a tiny but more; it just went from one thing to the next for parts
