A bit map is a storage tool for digital images which will be stored as pixels
Whereas a vector is a tool to create shapes using mathematical formulae.
They are stored as different file typesie bitmap- JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG vector- WMF, EPS, CGM, CDR
What is the difference between a vector based image and a bitmap (raster) based
image?
What is the difference between a GIF formatted file and a JPEG? Why are these
different and to what different purposes are they suitable for?
A JPEG is an image which contains lots of colour, however this compromises the
sharpness of the picture due to compression
A GIF image uses much fewer colours so is a much smaller image and is compressed
without compromising image quality
JPEG is used for photographs GIF is used for text and logos
What is the difference between an embedded graphic (image) and a linked graphic (image) in a Word or PowerPoint
document?
When using PowerPoint there are two types of graphic files that can be used. These are embedded files and
Linked Graphic files.
Embedded files can be manipulated by the user, and can be easily transported from one file to another. There size
does not matter
Linked graphic files, provide a direct connection to the source from which the graphic was obtained. This means that the file cannot be changed, however it is possible to
change the size of the file.
What is a 'colour palette'?
. A colour palette is the selection of colours in an image.
A small palette is comprised of a few colours, and is most commonly used for small images such as diagrams; where as a large
palette is comprised of many colours, is prominent in large photographic images.
What is lossless compression? Do JPEG format files normally use this?
Loose less compression is a class of data compression algorithms, which allow the identical reconstitution of data that has previously been
compressed.
Files in the format of JPEG don’t use loose less compression as the reconstituted form of compressed data is not exactly identical to the
original form. Therefore JPEG files are not suitable for compression if it is imperative that the end data is an exact replica of the original.
What does the FBS skills wiki say about using PNG files?
PNG or portable network graphics files are used as they aren’t accompanied by the many problems that JPG files are renowned for. The only main problem with PNG files is that they do not support animations.
The development of GIF graphics interchange format files, which use a
unique process of file compression, has shown that high resolution images can be compressed and reconstituted without suffering from blurring, which
some PNG files atrophy.
What is BAD about using .bmp format files in your work? Why should you try
to avoid this?
These files do not support compression
This makes very large files
So the are not easily saved and cannot be put on the web
What is Flickr? Why might someone use this resource? Does it have an academic use or is
it purely recreational?
Flickr is a photo sharing website where people can upload there own photos as well as view
others.
Bloggers use it as a photo repository
Can be used for recreation and academic use
