SCC baseball team with young squad in 2017By Doug Dornath

A younger team will be hitting the field for the 2017 South Central Calhoun varsity baseball team this summer as the Titans will have to find a way to replace nine seniors lost from last year’s squad under the direc-tion of Titan second-year head coach Nate Lamphier.

SCC’s roster this summer includes three seniors, six juniors, four sophomores, five freshmen and five eighth graders. Coach Lamphier said one of his team’s strengths this summer will be his pitching staff and the versatility of the athletes on the roster as well.

“This year our strength starts with our pitching staff,” said coach Lamphier. “We feel very good as a staff with where we are right now with our depth and talent. From there, we have multiple skilled guys who can play multiple positions due to their athletic ability. Having the ability to play various combinations will be another key for us.”

Among the top returning players for the Titans this summer include junior Kyler Steinborn, a first-team all-conference pitch-er a season ago, and second-team all-confer-ence senior Tyler O’Tool, who is both an out-fielder and a pitcher. Also returning is junior Hunter Muhlbauer at shortstop, senior Matt Toms at third base, and junior Tyler Jones, who will take over at first base for the Titans this summer.

Lamphier said sophomores Bennett Lee

and Jared Birks, and junior Jered Campbell will be competing for open outfield posi-tions while junior Shiloh Meyer and fresh-man Zane Neubaum will be competing for the starting catching position. Coach Lam-phier expects freshman Josh Henkenius to see most of the action at second base for the Titans while sophomore Chase McAlister will be used in several roles and was listed as the most versatile player on the Titans’ roster this summer.

“Last year, we were a talented veteran group,” said Lamphier. “This year, we are a talented young group. With that, the key this year will be how we face and overcome the growing pains that we will face throughout the season. The sooner we can adapted as a program, the sooner we will start to see con-sistent success.”

Lamphier expects Alta-Aurelia to be the favorites in the Twin Lakes Conference in 2017 along with Pocahontas Area/Lau-rens-Marathon. He thinks Southeast Valley, East Sac County and SCC to be in the mix for teams who also have a shot at winning the conference. He lists Newell-Fonda as the dark horse squad this summer in the TLC because the Mustangs return a young but talented squad from a season ago.

Conference games this summer for the SCC baseball team include the following dates, locations and opponents: against GT/RA May 31 in Ruthven, versus Sioux Central June 2 in Peterson, against Manson North-west Webster June 5 in Lytton, at Gilmore

City June 7 against West Bend-Mallard, ver-sus Alta-Aurelia June 12 in Lytton, at Poca-hontas June 14 against PAC/L-M, at Lytton June 16 against East Sac County, at Storm Lake June 19 versus St. Mary’s, at Lytton June 21 against Newell-Fonda and at Dayton June 23 against Southeast Valley to close out TLC conference games.

In June, the Titans baseball team has sev-en home games in Lytton including Ogden (June 1), Manson Northwest Webster (June 5), Alta-Aurelia (June 12), OA-BCIG (June 15), East Sac County (June 16), Newell-Fon-da (June 21) and Southeast Valley (June 29). The Titans final regular season home con-test is against Coon Rapids-Bayard July 3 and the final regular season game will be against Greene County in Jefferson July 6.

Also in 2017, the Titans have some new op-ponents on its schedule including an appear-ance at the Waterloo Bucks Tournament Sat-

urday, May 27 as they will face Dike-New Hartford in game one of the tournament, as well as playing a double-header June 10 at Oelwein against Starmont and Oelwein.

The post-season begins for the Titans in Class 2A July 8 against an opponent and site yet to be determined by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

South Central Calhoun’s varsity softball team in 2017 has four seniors to lead the squad this summer. Sydnie Schultz, Kelsi Carlson, Vanessa Squier and Kali Babcock hope to lead a young Titan softball team to more wins as the SCC team from a year ago was 2-19 overall and finished 2-8 in the Twin Lakes Conference standings.

It’s the third season at the helm for SCC head coach Eric Francis, who has a career coaching record of 36-99 overall in seven years total of coaching softball entering this season.

Joining the four seniors this summer are three juniors, four sophomores, five fresh-men and eight eighth graders on the Titans roster.

Representing the junior class for SCC this summer are Drew Pochinski, Hannah Seil and Dezerae Blankenship. Members of the

team who are sophomores include Maddie Jones, Riley Snyder, Kaylynn Kruckenberg and Payton Steig.

Offensively, the top returning batter with the most hits in 2016 was Sydnie Schultz with 16 while Jones and Carlson both had 14. Jones is the lone returning player who earned all-conference recognition a season ago as she was named to honorable mention

with contests against Storm Lake (May 22), Glidden-Ralston (May 23), West Bend-Mallard (May 24) and Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon (May 26)

SCC’s first Twin Lakes Conference game of the schedule is at Ruthven Wednesday, May 31 against GT/RA.

The Titans final home contest in 2017 will be a non-conference game against

Southeast Valley in Lytton June 29 and the final regular season game is at Wall Lake against East Sac County June 30. The Class 2A post-season begins for the Titans Sat-urday, July 3 against an opponent yet to be determined by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
