Agenda
• What do we mean by “Green?”
• Green Movement, Green Business, Green Computing
• Our Tips for Going Green
• What does Refurbished Mean?
• Used versus Refurbished
• Benefits of Refurbished IT Equipment
“Green” is…
...a product or service that has minimal impact on the natural environment.
…the most efficient use of resources.
…a product made from partially or completely recycled materials.
History of the Green Movement
• Environmentalism• 1960s and 1970s• Founding of the Environmental Protection
Agency• Clean Air Act• Endangered Species Act• Banning pollutants such as DDT• Founding of Earth Day
The Green Movement Today
Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”
The transition from an impersonal global focus to a more personal local focus, which empowered individuals and companies alike.
Green Business
Green business is an enterprise that has no negative impact on the global or local environment, community, society, or economy—a business that strives to meet the bottom line.
- Cooney, 2009
Classifying Green Business
In general, business is described as green if it matches the following four criteria:1. It incorporates principles of sustainability into each of
its business decisions.2. It supplies environmentally friendly products or services that
replace demand for non-‘green’ products and/or services.3. It is greener than traditional competition. 4. It has made an enduring commitment to environmental
principles in its business operations.
- Cooney, 2009
“For a company that has 10,000 personal-computer desktops just leaving them turned on all night can cost more than $165,000 a year in electricity bills, while spewing more than 1,380 tons of carbon dioxide into the air per year…That’s roughly the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that come from driving a car for two months.”
-The Wall Street Journal, 2009
=10,000 Computers Left on Overnight Driving 1 Car for 2 Months
Why Go Green?
Green ComputingGreen computing is the scientific study of efficient and effective designing, manufacturing, using, disposing, and recycling of computers and computer related products like servers, network systems, communication systems, monitors, USBs, printers, etc.
-BrightHub, 2010
Four Paths to Green Computing• Reducing energy consumption of computers and other
related products as well as using them in an efficient manner.
• Refurbishing and reusing old computers as well as properly disposing and recycling unwanted computers and other equipment.
• Designing energy efficient and environmentally sound computers and accessories.
• Manufacturing computers and components with minimal effect on the environment.
-BrightHub, 2010
Our Tips for Going Green!• Make changes one at a time• Refrain from printing items that can be shared or stored
electronically • Use recycled products when possible• Replace older CRT monitors with LCD monitors• Dispose of used electronics via electronic recycling programs• Turn off electronics when not in use• Use a laptop instead of a desktop• Set your laptop to sleep when its not in use • Shut personal computers down if unused for more than 8
hours• Encourage Telecommuting• Virtualize!• Buy refurbished equipment
Virtualization is the consolidation of servers and systems to reduce power consumption and energy utilization. It leads to usage of more than one system on a single piece of physical hardware.
Virtualize and Save!
1. Power conservation – fewer servers overall means less power used
2. Manufacturing – less need for new systems to be built3. External factors – less space needed in an office or data
center, and less IT staff to manage multiple systems
Benefits of Virtualization
“Two million tons of used electronics are discarded yearly – only 18% of computers and television are recycled.”
-US Environmental Protection Agency, 2008
Why buy refurbished?
“A United Nations study found that 1.8 tons of raw materials are used to manufacture a PC, close to the same requirement for manufacturing a mid-sized car.”
-United Nations University, 2009
Why buy refurbished?
What does Refurbished mean? Refurbished IT equipment is used equipment that has been cleaned, tested,
reconfigured and warranted for further use.
Used
• Cleaned • Tested• Reconfigured• Certified
• Not Cleaned • Not Tested (sold as-is)• Not Updated • No Warranty
Refurbished
Where does the equipment come
from?
• Off-lease• Data center take-outs• Asset recovery facilities
Benefits of Refurbished IT Equipment
• Cost Savings• Reliability• Availability• Performance• Value• Environmentally Friendly (Green!)
Cost Savings
• Undergoes thorough testing• Enough time for any
manufacturing defects to be identified and repaired• Fairly new equipment,
still has several years of usability
Reliability
Availability
• Faster acquisition and turn around time• Abundance of equipment to choose from
• Cleaned and tested for performance capabilities• Equivalent to new equipment with the same configuration• Purchased from reputable resellers
Performance
Value
• No value lost at time of purchase.• Get more for for your money.
Green IT• Reduces overall carbon footprint• Saves from extracting resources for the purpose of building and shipping new equipment• Less energy used and fewer carbon emissions by offsetting manufacturing need
Purchase Refurbished with Confidence
• Customer Service• Certified Technicians• Warranties
ConclusionFrom saving money and resources to saving the environment, there are many reasons to “go green”. However, there are a lot of different ways to make your business more environmentally friendly. When navigating the maze of options the most important thing to remember is to consider what makes the most sense for your business AND the environment.
Conclusion• Consider your
impact• Work with like-
minded companies• Don’t compromise
quality • Save money and
resources
