This posting explains how to create a “favicon” on a WordPress website. A “favicon” (taken from “favorites icon”) is the small 16 pixel square logo or image that appears at the top of our browser tab. If you have any corrections or suggestions regarding this blog post, please comment on this page and/or email us at [email protected].

Making a Favicon

1. If you already have a logo/design you should reduce it to 16×16 to make sure it holds up. You then want to save it as a .ico and name it favicon.ico.

2. If you do not have one, there are different ways to make a favicon:

-First, if you know what you have in mind Adobe Photoshop is the perfect tool to use to design it from scratch. You can choose the style right with hands on experience. It is important to remember to save the favicon in the format .ico and save it as favicon.ico.

-Secondly, you can use sites that help you generate favicons, either from images that you already have or by using the sites tools. A good site that helps you generate your own icon and convert it into .ico is www.favicon.cc/.

Uploading your Favicon

3. In WordPress you will need to upload your favicon in three different places.

4. The first place will need to be in the WordPress Images Folder.

5. The second place will be in the Utilized Templates Images Folder.

6. If you used a supplemental framework, such as StudioPress you will need to change it in the framework.

7. Finally, test you favicon by opening up your page in a new window.

This posting explains how to update a “favicon” on a WordPress website. A “favicon” (taken from “favorites icon”) is the small 16 pixel square logo or image that appears at the top of our browser tab. In our scenario, we are using Go Daddy Linux hosting, but the majority of steps will be the same regardless of the hosting provider.

1. Create your Favicon. See our How to Create A Favicon blog post for more information.

2. Go to www.GoDaddy.com to access you account. Under the section My Products select Hosting. Select the appropriate domain and selecting the Launch Hosting Center icon. This will take you to Dashboard. You will need to replace the existing favicon in three different places: Root Folder, wp-Content/freelance and wp-content/genesis.

3. Select the Files folder within the Root Folder of the File Manager to replace the existing favicon.ico

4. The first favicon that will need to be replaced will be on html screen which should appear when you first open theFiles folder. Select and upload the image to the Root Folder to overwrite the existing favicon. Check the OverwriteFiles Box then upload the new favicon.

5. To access the second favicon you will need to change it in the Freelance framework. Select wp-content>Themes>Freelance. Under Freelance select Images. Select and upload the image and overwrite the existing favicon. Check the Overwrite Files Box then upload the new favicon.

6. To access the last favicon you will need to change it in the Genesis framework. Select wp-content>Themes>Genesis. Under Genesis select Images. Select and upload the image and overwrite the existing favicon. Check the Overwrite Files Box then upload the new favicon.

7. The Final step will be to validate the presence of the new icon in a new browser that has all of its cookies turned off. A good example would be using www.Opera.com. You may also have to clear out your browser cache.

If your favicon comes up you have done this successfully. It may take 24-48 hours for your favicon to completely show up.
