2. Where will this PD take place? This session will take place at Hackensack High School in EDP (room 150)

that is equipped with computers along with a mounted projector.

3. Will teachers receive professional development hours? Upon completion, teachers will receive a certificate for three (3) professional

development hours.

Objectives for the Day

My Educational Objectives: To explain the origins of Facebook Social Networking. To inform the audience of reasons why Facebook is used. To discuss the pros and cons of using Facebook. To propose tips that promote safe use.

Your Educational Objectives: To create a definition for the term “Facebook”. To discuss reasons why others use Facebook. To change privacy settings in Facebook To propose solutions for real-life scenarios.

Introduction: Clock Buddies Familiarize yourself with others in the session. Write their names for

each hour. These can be your potential buddies!

What is Facebook?

Get with your 6 o’clock buddy. List 3-5 words that come to your mind when I mention the term “Facebook”. Can you come up with a 1-3 sentence definition using those words?

Defining Facebook

According to TechTerms.com, “Facebook is a social networking website that was originally designed for college students, but is now open to anyone 13 years of age or older”.

Other examples of social networking include: MySpace, Twitter, Classmates, LiveJournal, and Flickr.

Facebook: The Origins

Zuckerberg founded Facebook with fellow Harvard students Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

Up and running on February 4, 2004.

At first, Facebook was limited to only Harvard Students

Began as “The Facebook” and later dropped to “Facebook” in 2005.

Later, it expanded other Ivy League schools and then to any college or university

High School students were added to the list. Finally, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address was allowed to sign up.

That was Then… This is Now

+ Facebook has made significant changes throughout the years including its homepage.

+ Boston University and NYU was later added to the list of participating schools.

+ Now, any country (excluding some countries like Syria and Iran) can join.

Why do You use Facebook?

Get with your 11 o’clock partner and discuss some ways in which you use Facebook? (If you do not use it, then explain how your kids and or students use it)

Pros of using Facebook

Colleges can advertise on Facebook to promote programs.

Communicate with fellow students, employees, or friends.

Create online photo albums for friends or relatives to see.

Develop blogs about your interests to attract others.

Easily browse for people. Few or no loading issues

Create a Facebook Click on Internet Explorer. Then go to “Favorites” and click on Facebook Setup Tutorial View the tutorial. (You will be provided with headphones.) Set up a new account with Facebook Then Browse through the site and view some of the

applications Finally answer the following questions:

- How can Facebook be applied to the classroom environment?-What are some other advantages to using Facebook?

Cons of using Facebook

Hackers gather any important information placed on homepage.

People may create false profiles and not be who they say they are.

May become addictive May discourage personal relationships Everyone knows your business Cyber bullying

Professional Image

Employers are starting to look at Facebook profiles to determine candidates.

How do you represent yourself?

Would you hire them?

Clean Image

What can I do? Make sure photographs are clean. (i.e. no

drinking, smoking, or inappropriate acts) Do not post anything too personal about

yourself (phone numbers or address). Remember that potential employers may

snoop around. (No vulgar language)

Privacy Settings

Other alternatives can be to limit your profile to other people you do not know.

We will now practice changing privacy settings on your profile.

Real World Scenario Get with your 2 o’clock partner

and read the follow scenario. Use your knowledge of Facebook to propose solutions to this problem.
