TREND ANALYSIS
• The broadcast chain becomes a public services media web
• New production tools needed because of required new workflows:
internet publish first, new playout (IT), new distribution (platforms)
• transition from traditional lineair business to
new all-digital IT&IP-based business
• the old law: crap in = crap out

STRATEGIC ISSUES
The major themes in technologies for audio-visual and interactive
media services in the next 2 years:
• Network IP production architectures & Cloud-based services
• File based quality control
• Immersive user experiences (UHD)
• Distribution control
• Growth in OTT delivery of services
• Metadata, and Personalization
• Security of systems
• Sustainable broadcasting
• Training the new broadcast engineer• E.g. with IABM
• Research & Work together

WORKPLAN
Mediapark-Immovator Technology Update 11-12-2015 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
• Goal: offer more content, new services, more
flexibility and reducing costs
• IP and internet technologies in production &
tape-to-file-based workflow transformation
• IT-based infrastructures for live production
workflows
• FIMS (Framework for Interoperable Media
Services) (AMWA & EBU)
• Live IP studio
• FNS: Study the impact of new IT& IP technologies on production practices
and workflows, offering guidance on using IP, cloud based environments
• IMPS: helps Members move towards a more integrated approach to
producing media content (especially in news and sports), providing
expertise and best practice. In collaboration with EBU Media and the
EUROVISION Academy

• Manual QC alone is not adequate anymore
and does not scale. As a result, it is
important for broadcasters to look into
automated file-based quality control
systems to cope with the large amount of
content and the abstract nature of digital
files
• QC: helps Members optimise the use of their automated QC systems,
provides guidance and share best practices on the practical
implementation of QC. Our EBU.IO/QC tool provides access to over
200 QC Test Items, each with a detailed description of a test that can
be performed on audio/visual material.
FILE BASED QUALITY CONTROL
Mediapark-Immovator Technology Update 11-12-2015 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
• “not more pixels, but better pixels”
• study the technical questions on what
formulates the next generation immersive
(‘higher quality’) TV system and the impact
to existing workflows
• UHD standardisation
• Codec testing
• HDR, WGC, HFR
• Future Audio
• BeyondHD: looks into television image quality in the future, including
the practicality, cost and potential impact on business models.
• BTF (Broadcast Technologies Future): alliance of non-industrial R&D
laboratories for broadcast futures: BBC, IRT, RAI, NHK, VRT, CRC
• FAR: helps Members to maximise the quality and availability of sound
production technology, provide guidance to move to new audio
systems. Contribute to ITU and ETSI standards

• The HDR issue:
– Backward compatibility– The problem is to encode a high
dynamic range signal into only an 8 or
a 10 bit signal. This is possible
because the human visual system has
a non-uniform sensitivity to light,
which allows a non-linear transfer
characteristic to be used. BBC R&D

• OTT: linear viewing vs time-shifted & on-demand
Non-traditional service providers new platforms
(e.g. Netflix, YouTube) drive viewers away from
traditional TV broadcasting.
• FDS studies the relevance of different broadcasting, fixed and mobile
TV distribution options and models for Public Service Media content &
services, in terms of reach, quality, free-to-air, and market position.

METADATA AND PERSONALIZATION
• Media information management
• be able to efficiently manage, extract, index and
retrieve information through the value chain, using
well established conceptual and process models.
• Semantic modelling
• SOA
• FIMS
• EBUcore
• EBU-TT
• Recommendations• MIM:helps Members to enhance and enrich their media by integrating their data
(descriptive and technical but also subtitles) from commissioning to distribution. We
also help Members with the identification and evaluation of tools for the analysis of
content and cheaper automatic data extraction.
• BIS RecSys
Mediapark-Immovator Technology Update 11-12-2015 E.M. Verharen (NPO)

the primary distribution mechanism remains
predominantly analogue. Transitioning to attractive
digital and hybrid services, offering a new radio
experience for consumers is a challenge.
• DRP: provides the platform for EBU Members to help in the move from analogue to
digital and hybrid radio platforms, through prototyping, testing and demonstrating
new services based on digital and hybrid radio.

Mediapark-Immovator Technology Update 11-12-2015 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
The advantages of IT/IP infra can only be obtained if the user can build systems made of best of
breed components for its needs coming from different vendors and service providers. A common
approach amongst product and standard interfaces is required.
• JTNM (Joint task force on networked media): works on defining a reference architecture (generic system models and frameworks) for key subsystem
components. Collaboration between EBU, SMPTE, VSF

Mediapark-Immovator Technology Update 11-12-2015 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
• Challenges ahead
• Make our programmes/content available in the
right form to our audiences where and when
they want
• Essential to collaborate on the (technical) issues
• Learn from each other’s new workflows and services
• Start from our strengths
• We produce local content
• We (still) have the biggest audiences
• We understand our audiences
• Looking forward to it.
