Who We areWe are a research centre that focuses on innovation within companies and public organisations. Our goal is to make a significant contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of companies, at a national, regional and European level. Over the last 10 years, convinced that the sustainable management of natural resources and the development and implementation of technologies with a low environmental impact by companies will contribute to realising this goal, we have acquired expertise in the field of ecotechnologies. Our competences in environmental assessment, life-cycle analysis (LCA), process and materials engineering and modelling now enable us to participate in large-scale European projects, and to establish associations between these projects and Luxembourg companies and organisations. A further asset is our proximity to public administrations, to whom we provide scientific support within the scope of the implementation of European policies regarding energy and water. Finally, our approach, which incorporates all technological aspects, modelling and simulation, innovative materials, the development of tools, and environmental marketing, enables us to provide a total solution for our customers.

our aim (What We Want)We want to contribute to an environment that is favourable to the development of ecotechnologies in Luxembourg and to assist European and international companies in rising to the main challenges with which they are faced:

• To increase their competitiveness and develop new markets by investing in the development of environmental technologies;

• To align their strategies with the EU 2020 objectives for smart growth, most notably in the area of ecoinnovation.

What We proposeIn order to respond to the needs of companies and players within the public sector, we have developed an innovation programme in which we mobilise all of our scientific and technological skills in an interdisciplinary manner. The ECOTECHNOLOGYprogramme mobilises players using the following themes:

• Innovative technologies for wastewater treatment;

• Renewable energies and technologies with optimised energy performance;

• Innovative materials for environmental technologies.

Our ambition is:

• To support Luxembourg companies that are active in the field of ecotechnologies through collaborative research projects and access to public resources (e.g. law of 5 June 2009 relating to the promotion of research, development and innovation);

• To identify, develop, test and transfer innovative environmental services and products;

• To encourage the collaboration between the various public and private players and to develop multi-disciplinary approaches, e.g. within the scope of the Ecoinnovation Cluster (www.ecoinnovationcluster.lu).

hoW to innovate With usWe offer five types of collaboration:

projet phare

Launched in 2008, the WATERTECH "Tools and methods for the scientific evaluation of ecotechnologies in the wastewater sector" project aimed to promote the compliance of operators within the wastewater sector vis-à-vis the European directives for the protection of the natural aquatic environment by evaluating the existing tools, methods and technologies and by providing the private and public players within the wastewater sector with decision-making assistance.

The project has made possible:

• The acquisition, development and application of diagnostic instruments (prototypes for wastewater treatment, respirometry, online analytic sensors) and, in a broader sense, of evaluation tools and methods (process modelling and simulation, multi-criteria analysis);

• The transfer of knowledge and skills through training courses, conferences and publications;

• The initiation and support of technological innovation projects in the field of wastewater treatment, in close collaboration with SMEs and public operators (communes and inter-communal associations).

One such example - a veritable success story - is the partnership contract with the company Environmental&RecyclingTechnologies (ERT) Sàrl for the evaluation of the effectiveness of a moving-bed treatment process for urban wastewater, based on the use of a "LEVAPOR" biofilm medium. This medium comes in the form of a sponge that has been impregnated with active carbon. The research conducted in a 4m3 pilot reactor situated in the Uebersyren wastewater treatment plant has shown this to be a compact, robust and competitive process for the treatment of high organic loads. The process allows the limit values imposed by legislation to be respected, with regard to concentration and in terms of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removals. This process may also be used to increase the wastewater treatment capacity of existing plants, without major investment. The product, which resulted from research led by CRP Henri Tudor, has been approved by the Belgian authorities and is pending certification by the French authorities.

The WATERTECH project was supported in Luxembourg by CRP Henri Tudor, and co-financed by the ERDF.
