Overview
Why e-skills passports?
• Weakness identified in Ofsted Inspection May 2006:
“little use of ILT in teaching and learning”
• Internal /external SAR process January 2007:
e-learning downgraded to a 4
• Serious need to improve e-learning at Eastleigh
• Improve recording of usage of e-learning
e.g in SoW, lesson observations, curriculum SARs
• Purchase additional hardware and software
e.g projectors, laptops, Sympodium, Qwizdom
• Develop role of E-Learning Facilitator
Actions taken to improve e-learning
• Need to identify skills gaps and target training
• EM and RW attended briefing on e-skills passports
at JISC RSC SE SELN meeting in October 2006
• Decided e-skills passports just the ticket!
• N.B. Eastleigh not involved in first wave of
passports
• N.B. 150 free passports as part of Provider for the
Future initiative

• National scheme developed by e-skills UK
(Sector Skills Council for IT and Telecoms industries)
• Self-assessment of IT/ILT skills
• 17 preset skills
• 5 levels of competence within each skill
• Self-checking questions within each level of
competence

• None of the preset skills specific to e-learning
• Added 2 bespoke skills
– Moodle
– Using e-learning tools

Setting the levels for theteacher’s profile
• Mass roll-out to teachers on INSET Day March 2007
• Presentation to staff about rationale and how to
complete
• Staff taken to computer rooms to complete their
passports
• Each room supervised by a briefed IT Technician
• EM, RW and Nick Sweetman from e-skills UK on
hand
Implementing e-skillspassports at Eastleigh
• Over 100 passports completed on the day
• Line Manager approval built into the system
• Line Managers briefed about approval process
• Non-attendees and new starters chased up
• Now 150+ e-skills passports completed

• Identifying skills gaps was the first step
