What is E-Research • Research activities that utilize advanced ICT capabilities
and embrace new research methodologies (Fitzgerald,Abbot ,2006; O’Brian ,2005).
Also has been used to describe large-scale and distributed, collaborative science
• E-Research changes the scale and sensitivity of instruments, enables remote access to results, instruments, & data resources, makes simulation and modeling of virtual experiments possible, creates aggregations of data, and accelerates research interaction and expands the scale. – Julie Watson -

High Performance Computing
• Useful for – complex data processing and
analysis jobs that standard desktop computers would find it difficult or impossible to perform, and
– enable users to run many processing jobs with different parameters or input files more quickly.
– enable researchers to tackle some of the most demanding scientific and technical problems in fields

Today’s E-Research Usage
• Building models of humans from processes in cells to tissue, organs and finally the whole body
• Analyzing data from large-scale scientific facilities like the square kilometers array of telescopes
• Building simulations of social processes to inform policy making in urban planning or healthcare
• Using character recognition and text classification technologies in the study of ancient documents
• Cataloging finds in an archaeological dig.
Examples of Research Projects with E-Research
Parkinson’s Disease
• Research for drug therapies that could halt the progression of this disease – Project involved molecular
modeling, molecular dynamics simulation and biochemical analysis.
– Researchers use e-research features to use all necessary promise for retarding the progression of this disease
Caltech’s Palomar Observatory
• Discovery of objects larger than Pluto – High Performance Wireless &
research & Education network (HPWREN) makes it possible of this discovery
– This discovery resulted the demotion of Pluto as a Planet.
– HPWREN supported real time transmission of astronomical image data from the telescopes located in different institution

• Number of collaborative institution : >3, geographically dispersed
• Data Access Level : Raw Data Only.
• Infrastructure Access Level : Open to All
Data & Infrastructure Sharing
• By using e-research, your computer is connected to a research network across the globe.
• You’ll be able to share information that you obtain
• You’ll be able to access data from other institution located in far away country.
• E-research will allow you to use facilities that is owned by other institution virtually.
High Performance Computing
• You produce multi-processing job from datasets that already being collected since the past 5 years and the datasets is spread across institutions repository.
• Calculating the mass is possible in a fast way, and always use up-to-date raw data.
• When it’s needed, you can generate visualization of data.
Collaboration
• With E-Research feature : collaboration, you’ll be able to communicate your finding live by using web-conference
• You will also be able to request for collaboration with different institution solving similar project.
Conclusion
