Raster Graphics

Raster is made up of bitmaps- these are made up of millions of pixels/coloured pixels.

Resizing pictures used by bitmaps can distort.TIFF is an example of a flexible bitmap image

format supported by virtually all paint, image-editing, and page-layout applications.

Vector Graphics

Vectors are made up of paths, strokes or vectors.Vectors are good when you want to enlarge an

image as well as make the image smaller as the image is defined by start to end.

Good for logos for turn them from:-business cardsTo: -billboards

JPEGStands For Joint photographic expert group

Used For Photographs and web formats- for facebook and mobile phone cameras.

Advantage Can be shared and used on the internet, such as social networking sites-twitter-facebook-instagram -tumblr

Disadvantage Loses quality every time you edit due to compression and recompression.

Page 6: Digital graphics

TIFFStands For Tagged image file format

Used For Desktop publishing- popular with graphic designers.TIFF is used for publishing because supports both embedded paths and alpha channels which can be used to create transparent backgrounds for images in a page layout application.

Advantage Can save multi-page documents Doesn’t lose any quality due to compressionTIFF documents have a maximum file size of 4 GB when using a newer version of photoshop

Disadvantage Don’t use TIFFs for web images- Produces big files. If you open the file in another application, only the flattened image is visible.

Page 7: Digital graphics

PSDStands For Photoshop Document

Used For Image manipulation.Front cover images for magazines

Advantage Saves layers and page formatting information.Supports transparency. This is similar to (PSB) which is a larger document.Preserves many photoshop features and maintains image appearance.Document is faster to open.

Disadvantage Limited software useCant send it to someone who doesn’t have the right software, such as photoshop.

Page 8: Digital graphics

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the way the shapes are used and how you can tell that it is a penguin. I also like the colours used to make it look a bit different.

What would you improve if you did it again?I would probably change the shapes so that they don’t overlap and add a little more detail because it looks quite boring.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I really like the effects used on this image because it all looks quite life-like. I how detailed the image looks and the little things like her nose ring and teeth. I also like the way it doesn’t look perfect and you can see some minor imperfections. I like how similar this looks to the original image, I think that you can really tell that its her.

What would you improve if you did it againIf I could do it again I might try work on them imperfections even though I don’t really mind them, but just to see what it would look like if it was more perfect.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the way the text goes well with the image and the font used for it as well as the colour.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I did it again I would try to make it look more interesting as it looks quite simple and easy. I would also make sure the grammar is correct because it is missing capital letters

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the use of rotascoping on this image I think it was done nice and carefully and the colours chosen work well.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I could have done it again I maybe would have chosen a different place for the text above that says ‘print based’ and perhaps a different font.

Content

I am planning to design a T-shirt featuring Lumpy space princess, a character from Adventure time. The imaged will be rotoscoped, and there will be text either underneath the image or rounded to fit inside the mouth saying ‘OH MY GLOB’ I want the t-shirt to either be white or a shade of purple.

Export Format

PNG

Advantages; It can save transparency and has lowered opacity

Disadvantages; Larger file sizes than e.g JPEG

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?• I think that the use of rotascoping looks good and I like how the text inside the

mouth curves round so you can tell the character is shouting it.

What could be developed if the image was repeated? • I would maybe try and experiment with different shading because its quite a

simple design

Page 27: Digital graphics

Peer Evaluation

• What are the strengths of the final image?• I like the image because I think that the rotascoping looks good and the way the

teeth and the tongue have been done. I also like the stroke used to give it a nice outline.

• What could be developed if the image was repeated?

• I think that the features on the face could be experimented with a bit more, I think that it could look better if the eyes were open.

Page 28: Digital graphics

Peer Evaluation

• What are the strengths of the final image?• I like the text used in the mouth and how it matches well with the facial features, I

also like how even though it is quite a plain design it still looks good on a T-shirt. I think that the rotascoping is done quite well because it really looks like the original character.

• What could be developed if the image was repeated?

• I think that some more effort could have been done in to how the arms and fingers were made. They make the image look a little bit hand drawn and not as well as the rest of it. I also think that the stroke around the outside looks a bit different at the bottom, so I would improve that if it could be repeated.

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

• Since the beginning I have kept the original idea to have the text ‘oh my glob’ somewhere on the image and that has stayed on my final product. When it got to the flat plan I had decided on an image and placed the text underneath, but whilst on photoshop I decided to change the image and make it my own. I also move the text from underneath and put it inside the mouth.

Page 31: Digital graphics

Is your product suitable for your audience?

• In my proposal I stated that the audience will be suitable for children to late teens. It will also be suitable for boys and girls. The reason why my product is suitable for teens and not just children (due to it being shown on a children’s channel) is because the programme at times can have a slightly more adult humour. Which is why older people tend to watch it and would know what my product is about.

Page 32: Digital graphics

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

• I like the use of rotascoping on my image. When I originally finished the image I noticed that the bottom of the image was quite jagged and didn’t look very good. So I used the pen tool to create a new path to cover up the bit that I didn’t like and added a stroke to give it the same outline as the rest of the image. For all the features I used the shape tool and warped them to the position that I wanted them. I applied a clipping mask to the teeth and the tongue to make them inside the mouth. I don’t really like the shapes that I used for the arms and fingers. I found it quite hard to get them in to the shape that I wanted and they don’t look very good. I also think that the effect used at the bottom didn’t work as well as I hoped it would because it looks noticeably odd compared to the rest of the outline.

Page 33: Digital graphics

What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?

• I like that it noticeably looks like the character its based on and the little details like the teeth and the text, I like where the text has been placed. I don’t think that my product looks very good overall due to the way the arms and fingers have been made and the outline at the bottom, I also think that the eyebrows could be improved

Page 34: Digital graphics

Why did you include the content you used?

• Images, fonts, effects, colours• I started off with an image from google of LSP

and just used it for a general outline of how I wanted it to look like. I found a font that I liked from dafont.com and warped it to make it look a bit different. I used rotascoping, warping and shapes. The colours I used were black, purple, and yellow and white

.

Page 35: Digital graphics

What style have you employed in your products?

• The influence of my product is the TV programme ‘Adventure Time’

• Whilst looking on redbubble I saw quite a few designs for the programme and it gave me the idea to use LSP and her favourite quote of mine. I chose to use rotascoping because its quite a simple image and I don’t think using shapes for the full thing would look as good. I used shapes for the hands because they needed to be more rounded and if I had a better skill at warping they could have looked good.

Page 36: Digital graphics

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

• The planning and research helped me because at first I was struggling to think of an idea, so research of my favourite programmes and taking a look on redbubble to see existing designs of programmes helped me a lot. I saw a few designs with LSP on and various different quotes so I just put the two together.

Page 37: Digital graphics

Analyse each of your final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects you would

do differently if you were to repeat the project

I like how the image is quite simple

The bottom of LSP doesn’t look the same as the rest so I would have rotascoped it differently next time

The way I shaped the arms didn’t work too well, I think that I should have added a stroke to them like the rest of the image.

I liked the rotascoping on this imagbecause it looks very similar to the original picture

I think the facial features don’t look as well as they could have done, especially the eyes because close up they don’t look very realistic

I like the effect used on the tattoos, I think it works really well and gives a genuine outline to her real tattoos

I think the shading on her face works well and makes it look more realistic

Page 38: Digital graphics

Peer Feedback

• I agree with the feedback about my design, I agree that there are certain parts that could have been more concentrated on. I agree with the most about the arms/hands, that was the part that I was most unhappy with, I think it definitely could have been improved or a different technique could have been used. Overall I think the feedback was good and it will definitely help me improve my work. The one thing I disagreed with was the shading. The character LSP is completely purple, if I changed the colour I don’t think it would have looked right and caused confusion for people that know the program.
