Raster Graphics

• A raster graphic is a digital image that is made up of pixels or ‘dots’. The image beneath shows the structure of Raster Graphic files, its also shows the loss of quality which can happen when enlarging the files.

Page 4: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Vector Graphics

• Vector graphics are made up from paths rather than pixels; this allows the image to be rotated or rescaled without a loss of quality. The image beneath shows the difference in quality after rescaling the two different types of files.

Page 5: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

JPEGStands For Joint Photographic Experts Group

Used For Most common file format for images, used for websites etc.

Advantage -Small file size-Standardised File type so high compatibility- Good for images with continuous colours

Disadvantage -Recompression causes loss of quality- Can’t have transparent backgrounds - Bitmap format so quality is degraded as image is enlarged

Page 6: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

TIFFStands For Tagged Image file format

Used For Graphic Design Work, magazine design

Advantage -Multiple pages can be saved in the same file-Lossless compression so quality is not lost when compressed and recompressed.- Can be opened on any computer

Disadvantage -Large file size, it would be impractical to use tiff for a digital camera for example as not many images could be stored

Page 7: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

PSDStands For Photoshop Document

Used For Photoshop- Image manipulation

Advantage -Multiple layers, can assign names to help organisation-Supports transparency - Useful for re-editing if you have a PSD saved

Disadvantage -Large Files if large amount of layers are used-Only compatible in Photoshop and other adobe programs-Cost of Photoshop-

Page 8: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

AIStands For Adobe Illustrator file

Used For Logo creation and web graphics

Advantage -Primarily uses vector graphics, so scaling is not an issue unlike Photoshop which is primarily a raster based programme.-Can make use of different layers-Files are relatively small- Can be used in a variety of different programmes for example cinema 4d.

Disadvantage -Program is hard to learn-It gives the image a clean “vector” look which some people dislikeThin lines may dissapear if a vector drawing is reduced in size too much

Page 9: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

3DSStands For 3d Studio File

Used For 3 dimensional modelling, creating virtual environments for games, Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Advantage -3D environments can be created-Multiple programme support-Industry standard for 3D graphics-Can also be used for creating moving images in 3D

Disadvantage -Large amount of data-Directional lights within the virtual environment are not supported-Camera names and light names are limited to 10 characters, this can be an issue if you have lots of them.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like that I managed to cover the whole of the elephant in shapes and its still came out looking like an elephant. I also like that I have managed to areas such as his truck and his tail with really small shapes and they still look like the should so aswel.

What would you improve if you did it again? There are only two things I would improve if I did this again and that is I might do different shapes for different parts of his body and then use different colours on those different shapes aswel to add a lot more detail and so its actually looks like an elephant but with solid colours rather than just looking like a silhouette. Secondly if I were to do this task again I would probably just use tools rather thank shapes because with shapes you can never get it just right and it is very time consuming aswel, when you have tools which you could do the task with in a few minutes and you would also get a higher level of accuracy aswel.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? The things I like about my image are that I think I’ve gone into a fair amount of detail throughout so it looks like it has been rotor scoped fairly. Particularly I like the gas mask even though it wasn’t the key thing about the image it seems to be the bit which I put the most time and effort into, so I think that personally its looks the best thing on the image.

What would you improve if you did it again?I think if I was to do this task again I would definitely improve his facial details such as wrinkles and hair because I think I've just gone over his face very basically and I could of put a lot more shadow in there to improve the overall outcome aswel. Secondly I would put more time and effort into his nose aswel because this was probably the hardest part of the image to get correct because if you put in his nostrils and the shape of the nose it just doesn’t look right. Finally I would also go into a lot more detail with his beard aswel because even though it looks like his beard on the photo its just doesn’t look right when you zoom in because its just one solid block of colour.

What did you like about your image? The things I liked about my image were, I just like the general layout and how it looks with the different fonts I used. I also like fact I have used the sign for infinity rather than just writing the work “infinite” because its gives it some originality. Finally I like the images which I have used in the background of “Human stupidity” & “The universe” because they are both relevant.

What would you improve if you did it again? The things I would do to improve it, if we were to do this again, would be I might find a better photo for the “human stupidity” background because it is not very clear at first of what the background image actually is when you first look at it, I would also do the same with the word “The Universe” even though you can tell it is the universe, I reckon there are some better pictures I could of used just to make it that little bit clearer.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image?I like the fact that my image looks nice and simple, but in my opinion it doesn’t look really bad at the same time, because its not too simple. I also like the choice of colours I have used on the logo aswel because I think they compliment each other nicely, also with the slight radial gradient in the background.

What would you improve if you did it again? If I were to do this task again I think I would just put a lot more time and effort into it because, it was abit rushed. I would firstly make it look a lot more professional, I may also try and create a logo just using the pen tool even though it would be difficult to do, it may prove worth while if I put enough time and effort into it.Secondly I may also include an image on the logo aswel, I'm not sure what image I would put on because its difficult to find the right image what goes well with the text etc…Finally if I was to do the task again I would do the same kind of idea just experimenting with lots of different fonts, colours and shapes of the backgrounds because they are very simple so they are very quick to do aswel, so it wouldn’t be that hard to do a lot more of the same type of logo’s.

Content

I'm going to create a T-shirt based around the two main characters from the TV show “Breaking Bad”; Walter White & Jessie Pinkman. I’ve got an image of them both sat on a sofa with gas masks after they have cooked some crystal meth, I'm going to rotor scope the images of them individually. For the theme of my design I’ve taken the logo of the TV show Master Chef and change the name of logo to “Master Meth” I'm also going to change the fill of the logo to some blue crystal meth

Audience

The audience for my T-Shirt is only really going to Breaking Bad fans because someone who hasn’t watched it wouldn’t really understand the what is on the T-short. Plus there is age target range because anyone can watch Breaking Bad if they want to

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

I think that my final design does reflect my original intentions, not maybe quite as well as I would of liked it do have done but it’s basically what I set out to create, because I have the “master meth” logo which I planned to create I have Walt and Jesse rotor scoped and put on the design with the logo which I planned out to create in my original intentions as well. The main thing which it doesn’t reflect is that I should put Walt and Jessie onto a kitchen background like you see in the master chef picture I would of also put them in similar clothing to what they have on the master chef picture if I had the right skills and the time aswel.Secondly another way in which it doesn’t reflect my original intentions is the fact that I had to put them in circles with a blue meth background and then create a clipping mask aswel, this was purely because the images I had to rotor scope all had very abrupt edges on them so I had to put them in circles otherwise when the design was put on the T-shirt they would all come to an abrupt end somewhere and the design wouldn’t look right.Overall I think that my design is a good reflection of my design proposal but not so much when it comes to the mood board of my final idea and also the flat plan.

Page 28: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Is your product suitable for your audience?

I think my final product is highly suitable for my target audience because, in the proposal I said “The audience for my T-Shirt is only really going to Breaking Bad fans” and I created a product which again would only appeal to breaking bad fans because anyone who hadn’t watched breaking bad wouldn’t look at this T-Shirt and buy it because they wouldn’t really have a clue what the whole point of the twist on master chef was. I’m not sure whether it would be suitable for all breaking bad fans like I said it would be in the proposal, because you would probably have to be around 18-Late 20’s to really wear this shirt. The only way that it may not be suitable for my audience is that when you look at the image of Jessie Pinkman it doesn’t look just right, because his face looks really chubby, so this might out my target audience off because the rotor scoping could of just been done to a higher level.Overall I think that yes my product is suitable for my audience, because I have managed just to make it breaking bad themed which is what my original target audience was as well, it may have been more suitable if I could of gone into a higher degree of accuracy with the rotor scoping of Jesse.

Page 29: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

I really like the technique of rotor scoping even though at times it can be very frustrating especially if you just can’t seem to get the image to look how you would like it to look.I also think that the magnetic lasso tool is really easy to use, because its pretty straight forward even though it appears you can only do straight lines if you click enough times and put enough points on a round object the outcome will look round aswel. One thing which I disliked about rotor scoping is that it is really hard to go to a big level of detail unless you start picking out the smallest bits of an image and you also have to choose the right colours aswel or it just doesn’t look right. Finally another thing is that, well for me personally with the magnetic lasso tool if you accidently double clocked after going basically three quarters of the way around an image it would select what you had done and there was no way to un-do that double click which would be frustrating because you would either have start with that image again or you could just leave what you had then go round the last quarter and the merge the two images. The other techniques I have used are just were I created a clipping mask for the circles to fit the blue meth background in and also put the characters in the circles by creating a clipping mask. I like this technique because it gives just abit more to the image rather than having a solid colour background.

Page 30: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?

The things which I like about my final product are;Firstly I think the “Master Meth” logo is really good and I have used the right font aswel because it wouldn’t be the same if I had used a font other than the one which is used on the TV show. Secondly I like the whole idea of it as it was an original idea because where I looked on the internet I couldn’t find any designs which are similar. Finally another thing which I like about my final product is that the blue meth background I used on the circles and the font aswel, would again make it appeal a little bit more to the target audience because they could relate to it and know what the blue background was.I like that fact that when you look at my final product it kind of looks like a gas mask as well with the two circles representing the eyes and the logo and text representing the main , which ties in with the whole idea of them cooking meth again they are also wearing gas masks in the rotor scoped images. The things which I dislike about my final product are;Jessie’s rotorscope I feel as if I could of put more time and effort into it, as I did with the rotorscope of Walt and that would increased the overall quality of the images aswel. Finally I don’t like the fact that I had to put the images into circles aswel, because I think it would of just looked better if I had them out of the circles but it would of taken a lot more time to make it so the bodies don’t some to an abrupt end.

Page 31: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Why did you include the content you used?

I used the content I used because, I used the colour of the logo I created for the “master meth” and I also used the same colour/theme in the background of the two circles which had Walt and Jesse in, I liked this because the background theme was some blue crystal meth which tied in very well of the theme of my whole T-shirt, because it was themed about breaking bad and one of the key ideas is that Walter White cooked blue crystal meth. This choice of colour would also make it more appealing to my target audience.

I also used the font that I choose to use for my design because again it fits in with the theme of Breaking Bad again, the font I chose was one that someone had uploaded to dafont.com, and the font was an exact replication of the one used on the breaking bad TV show. The only problem was that I had to create my own letter for the M’s used in the start of “Master & Meth”.

The reason why I had Walt and Jesse in circles rather than just being free on the design was purely because the images both had very abrupt stopping points to them and if I had put them on the design just how they were then it wouldn’t of looked right, so I put them both into circles to stop this problem, I'm still happy with the outcome but I think it would of looked better if they were free out of the circles.

Page 32: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

What style have you employed in your products?

The existing products that I based my product around, the majority of them were off red bubble, because as I searched for breaking bad related products as you can see on my mood board there are hundreds of designs which all play upon that Walter White is a meth “cook” so that gave me a starting point to base my whole design around, then after looking through endless design, based around Walter being a cook, I saw one which was a mock of the popular TV show Hells Kitchen, this gave me an idea to do one about “Master Chef” and “Ready, Steady Cook” as I hadn’t seen anyone designs which were based around the two TV shows. Probably one of the main influences which made me choose the Breaking Bad theme design was the fact that I have just finished watching it and that it’s an extremely popular TV show so I thought it would be quite popular.

There is only really one visual style which I used in my product and that is the rotors coping of Walt and Jesse, I chose this because after doing a fairly successful rotor scope of Walt in the first task we had to do, I liked the whole idea of how when a image is rotor scoped that it looks different to the original image but if you have seen the person or object on the original image before then you will immediately know what it is that has been rotor scoped.

Page 33: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

I think that the planning and production did really help, because when we were first set the task I didn’t have any idea’s at all about what my product was going to be based around, until we had that lesson were we spent the entire lesson just looking through different design people has uploaded onto redbubble and this helped me alot because I’ve never really looked at any websites which are similar so I didn’t know what to expect of random designs for T-shirts. I think that the mind map stage of the planning was really useful as well because that’s basically were I got the main idea for my T-shirt.

I think that some of the weaknesses of the planning process was at first when we were told to do the mood board of the designs we liked, because I built my whole mood board just purely based around breaking bad because that was the design which I was going to do, but if I would of know that we could of chosen any images to put on my mood board there would have been a greater variety on there. Also I think the one of the weakness is that you could spend hours just searching through designs for ones that you liked because there is such a vast amount which have been uploaded to redbubble.

So overall I think that the main strengths of the pre-production and planning process was it was very useful to me who had no idea what I wanted to do before we started the planning process.

Analyse each of your final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects you would

do differently if you were to repeat the project• Put an image of each product on the page and analyse it through annotating

Weakness: Both the images of Walt and Jesse are both in circles rather then being a full shape

Strength: The image of Walt is a good resemblance of the real character

Strength: The blue background of the circles links into the whole breaking bad theme

Strength: The “Master Meth” logo has the same font used what is in the breaking bad TV show

Weakness: The image of Jesse rotor scoped is done quite badly and is not to the same level of accuracy as Walt

Weakness: Could of made the colour used for the logo more of a resemblance to the crystal meth made on Breaking Bad

A strength would also be, that the whole design looks like a gas mask kind of with the two circles as the two circular eyes and the logo as the respirator bit.

Page 35: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Analyse each of your final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects you would do differently if

you were to repeat the project

What I would do differentlyIf I was to do the same project again with the same design, I would change a few things;First of all I would use the same images but spend a lot more time on rotor scoping the images of Walt and Jesse to make more of a resemblance to the actual characters, especially Jesse because I think that is one of my main weakness of the project because Jesse doesn’t look like his character as much as I would of liked. I might of also put both the images in chef whites just to play upon the fact that they are “cooks” as well.Secondly I would of put a lot more time into the background as well if I had more time, rather than it just being transparent. I would of like to of either created a mockery kitchen or a scene from the RV or maybe just the RV in he background rather than just having two heads and a logo as my design. Thirdly I would of liked to take the two images out of the circles they are in and make them full images, because the only reason they are in circles is because the images I rotor scoped, all cut off before the gas mask had finished and cut off at their chests as well. Finally if I were to do the task again I would probably do lots of different TV shows such as Hells Kitchen which are more popular than master chef and would probably sell better because they would appeal to a wider audience as well.

Page 36: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?I like the play on words and also the images of the crystals because they flow together. The rota scoping is good because you can see all of the features in their faces. I like how you have incorporated the Masterchef sign for the play on words. Its also unique and creative.

What could be developed if the image was repeated? Making the colour of the writing different so it stands out more in the t-shirt.

Page 37: Digital Graphics Pro Forma

Peer FeedbackMy feedback overall was good, I think there could have been more points written which were bad things about my image, because the feedback is almost one sided, so there isn’t that much to write about the bad points which they pointed out.I kind of agree with the statement “The rota scoping is good because you can see al of the features in their faces.” I agree because yes I think that the rotor scoping of Walt is good because I have included more detail on his face and his clothes, but I don’t agree with the one about Jesse because I think that, I could of included a lot more detail on his face and his clothes as well. I also agree with it where it says “I like how you have incorporated the Masterchef sign for the play on words.” because this was the main point about my image with the title being changed from “Master Chef” to “Master Meth”, because without it, there wouldn’t be as much of a reference to cooking meth in my design.I agree with the response for what could be developed if the image was to be repeated, because when I look at my design now I have realised that the font of the text doesn’t really stand out as much as I would like it to and would be made clearer probably with a different image of the blue meth being used in the background, or maybe make the lettering a lot bigger just so there is more space for the actual image to stand out in.
