DESCRIPTION

Ventilation is a major challenge & cost for underground mines. The main objective of ventilation system is for the provisioning of sufficient quantities of air to all the working places & travel ways in an underground mine to dilute to an acceptable level those contaminants which cannot be controlled by other means. Where depth and rock temperatures are such that air temperatures are excessive, mechanical refrigeration systems may be used to supplement the beneficial effects of ventilation. The Minetec Ventilation On Demand (VOD) system which is an Add-on to the TRAX+TAGS HP Tracking & Tagging system and the ELF (Ethernet over Leaky Feeder) infrastructure system – power consumption for this service could be reduced in the order of 30% Control Strategies include: Manual Remote Control System Automated Remote Control System Scheduling Support (MINETEC SMARTS Simulation, Planning and Management suite or 3rd party systems) Rugged Environmental Control Sensors Ruggedised Tracking & Tagging System

TECHNOLOG OVERVIEW

Page 9: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

Partnership between Minetec and CSIRO established.!Product development started in 2006, with site trials in 2008 followed by with R&D site projects in 2009/10 culminating in first large scale implementations in 2013.!Terrestrial localisation systems are required forapplications where GPS is unavailable e.g. Underground.!The WASP (Wireless Ad-hoc System for Positioning) system has been developed to address challenging tracking and navigation applications not addressed by current technology.!Features of the system:

!High accuracy localisationLow cost hardwareProvides high rate data communicationsNo cabling requiredOperates in severe multipath radio environments

!

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

Page 10: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

Uses radio ranging TDOA (multiple patents)and INS to report position in real-time.!System consists of:Anchor Nodes – at fixed and known locationsMobile Nodes – attached to person/object to track!Accuracy depends on environment, below @ 60Hz;0.1 m outdoors line of sight (low multipath)0.2 m indoors line of sight (high multipath) ~1 m non line of sight

!All nodes provide a controlled data network• Data – OFDM 4 Mbps(BPSK) or 8 Mbps(QPSK).• Time Divisional capability for critical Data, which is used for Vehicle CAN information, Automation.

Nodes utilize (ISM) 5.8 GHz frequency band• 125 MHz bandwidth• Typical 50 mW transmit power

TECHNOLOGY

Page 11: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

TraxTags II consists of complex, dynamic tracking algorithms, high-speed communications, databases and various visual representations of the real-time data collected.

•Operates dynamically in 3D, 2D or 1D positioning for low node population and positional redundancy.

•Nodes operates in a self-healing Mesh Network.•No direct Ethernet or fiber connection required•Nodes can operate in conjunction with existing Wifi

networks without interference.•Strong local Processing Capability both at the Tag

level.

The Ranging Capability of the Tags both track and navigate providing a peer-to-peer precision distance measurement function which provides precision distance measurement, concurrently, including all detected APs.

This positional information, in conjunction with AP and Wireless Tag unique IDs allows real time mapping of all Personnel, Vehicles and tagged equipment in underground and above ground environments.

TECHNOLOGY : INTELLIGENT TRACKING

Page 12: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

The tags are actually micro-wireless, intelligent devices that actively participate in the Tracking and Tagging solution.

All personnel underground, open-pits or plants have active wireless devices incorporated into Cap-Lamp Battery packs underground or adaptions for above ground. Tag energy requirements are minimal, systems incorporating higher efficiency batteries (ex Lithium Polymer) and LED lighting is the preference to optimize the solution at all levels, although not a requirement. !Personnel Tags have a two-fold function; provide the capability to allow accurate location calculation and act as a communication platform for messaging and alerts. They may even be extended to provide biometrics from the wearer in emergency situations.

Attached wireless devices are battery powered and configured for a much more conservative communications activity without the risk of depleting battery resources during mine shifts.

INTELLIGENCE AT NODE & TAG LEVEL: PEOPLE SAFETY

Page 13: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

The concept of the Personnel Tag may be applied to the tracking and identification of relocatable equipment underground as well as above ground. !Moving machinery Wireless Tags are similar in nature to Personnel Tags. However, vehicle battery systems are used and a vehicle may have multiple Tags mounted. Vehicle Tags are usually complimented with Vehicle Access Points which better facilitate underground wireless coverage as well as above ground congested applications and have the added benefit of providing on-board communications interfaces for EMS monitoring, Positional Awareness, Live Tracking, Job Allocation systems, amongst others.

!In-vehicle NODEs may be installed with LVs and buses to facilitate a special tracking function that dynamically identifies “who is in what vehicle”. In this feature, the tracking system automatically identifies the passengers and driver in the vehicle when they enter the vehicle & removes the association when they exit.

INTELLIGENT MOBILE NODES: ASSET MANAGEMENT

Page 14: Comms international minetec ventilation on demand Underground Mining

The Trax and Tags II Intelligent Tracking solution consists of complex, dynamic tracking algorithms, high-speed communications, databases and various visual representations of the real-time data collected. Three major technologies:

• Wireless LAN Capability Self healing meshing function.

• Strong local Processing Capability Both at the Tag & NODE level.

• Ranging Capability The Tag as well as the NODE both track and

navigate providing a peer-to-peer precision distance measurement function which provides precision distance measurement, concurrently, including all detected APs.

This positional information, in conjunction with AP and Wireless Tag unique IDs allows real time mapping of all Personnel, Vehicles and tagged equipment in underground and above ground

The Trax and Tags II ranging technologies is proven in large scale commercial applications to provide Tracking accuracy down to 10cm in its Standard Configuration mode, making it suitable for micro geo-fencing applications such as proximity infringement detection, security applications such as proximity infringement of critical asset through the operations; mining, beneficiation etc.

Vehicles fitted with NODE’s participate in the wireless network and act as wireless network “extenders” mitigating coverage interruption issues associated with moving equipment, providing further opportunity for live telemetry from equipment.

The The Trax and Tags II ranging technologies used provide down to single cm accuracy in its custom configuration mode, making it suitable for autonomous mining applications and other high precision and/or personnel safety applications.

The systems are designed to continue to operate when access to centralized server infrastructure is lost, retaining the safety/situational awareness capabilities without real time reliance on centralized IT systems. Data or Visuals on a screen for an operator of an equipment OR information necessary to be sent back to a control room is integrateable
