• Each interconnected can has its own fuel injector, igniter, liner, and casing; all acting as an individual burner units

• The interconnectors are required for flame propagation during ignition and for even pressure distribution throughout the combustion section. (flame propagation tubes)Intro Process Fuel Supply

• Air from the compressor enters each individual chamber through a transition section.

• Combustion occurs within the inner liner.

• Louvers and holes control airflow into the combustion area.

Pros and Cons• a high resistance

to warpage because of large

degree of curvature

• amount of space required and the added weight because of the shape

** provides a larger combustion volume per unit of exposed metal

area

• Annular inner and outer AIR CASINGS form a tunnel around the

centre line of the engine• The FLAME TUBE is located in the space between the inner and outer

air casing. • Need for INTERCONNECTORS

• USAGE: both small and large engines• MOST EFFICIENT: thermal efficiency,

weight, and physical size• Process: similar to multiple-can design• Maintenance: removed as a single unit;

complete separation of the engine at a major flange.

• The “Half-Way House”• combination of both annular (outer shell)

and can-type (number of cans) designs mounted about the engine axis.

• Inner combustion chamber casing: serves as structural support and a heat shield

• Bearing oil supply lines run through it

• was invented by Pratt & Whitney • removable steel shroud= encircles the

entire combustion section. • multiple burner cans assembled radially

around the engine axis can-annular combustor (ease of maintenance) contains individual burner cans in an annular liner

(compact efficiency)

• Multiple- earlier engines usage; simple to dismantle; bulky

• Tubo-annular- more compact, with a smooth exterior and reduced weight

• Annular system- much more compact system and, same power output and mass flow, shorter upto 25% length
