Devastation in LehDevastation in Leh

• Flash floods triggered by a massive cloudburst that hit Leh town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region in the intervening night of 5, August, 2010.

• An unprecedented massive cloudburst triggered flash floods and mudslides in Leh town around midnight, washing away concrete structures including government offices, paramilitary camps and residential homes in the town.

• Hundreds waded through four feet deep mud to rush to higher ground as mudslides and flash floods inundated low lying areas.

• A total of 193 people including 23 foreigners have perished in flash floods & more than 65 people are still missing.

• Total of nearly 1000 homes and other major infrastructure has been washed away.

• The village of Choglamsar on the outskirts of the city was particularly badly hit. Many buildings were destroyed including Hospitals, bus terminals, radio station transmitter, telephone exchange and mobile-phone towers, bringing life to a standstill.

• A number of villages surrounding Leh have been badly affected by the floods. The people here could not be reached during the initial stages of the rescue effort since all roads had been damaged.

• Phyang village, which is about 20 kilomteres from Leh has been almost completely destroyed and at least 17 lives have been lost in the disaster.

• Other affected villages in Leh district are: Nimoo, Basgo, Ney, Sabu, Phang, Choklamsur, igu,Gia, Miru,Taskshi, Taru, Dha, Hanu Tan, Timmosgan, sku, marka, wanla, The district of Kargil has also suffered from flash flooding

Government and Military ResponseGovernment and Military Response

• The Indian Army launched massive rescue operations and 6000 security personnel were deployed.

• The Indian Air force has airlifted critical relief supplies including medicines, food, generators, tents, portable X-ray machines and emergency rescue kits.

• 125 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel deployed.

• The Government has set up Relief camps in Leh and is providing cooked food and some essential items to the affected families
